Allright, this sounds unreal but I have a new install of W2k and all was fine for a week or so. Then I tried the 'hibernate' mode to shutdown my system, and older IBM desktop, with updated BIOS to ACPI standards supposedly. When I shut down into hibernate mode, the power switch on my comp stopped responding. I could NOT boot it up again from hibernate mode, not by using the keyboard or mouse or anything else. Finally I shut off the power at the wall and waited...turned it back on and the system booted up normally, except without performing the usual initialization sequence. ( It usually starts an initialization sequence for a few moments then shuts off again at first power, this is normal ) It booted up all the way...Ok, nothing serious. But now, when I shut the system down the power switch is completely disabled no matter what I do! Even if I shut it off at the wall power and restart it like the first time, it goes through the initialization sequence and will not boot without removing the cover and resetting the CMOS chip! Any suggestions??

Look in the BIOS Power managment for references to the power button.

Cycle thru the different settings and try each untill one works or not.

Typically the choices are "Instant Off" "4 second delay ".

The BIOS power management has two options..APM (older) power management and ACPI (newer) OS controlled power management. There is no option for power switch management in the BIOS. That is a function of W2K hence, "what do you want the computer to do when you press the power switch" tab in the Power Management icon in Control Panel. Choices...standby, hibernate and shutdown.

Shutting down is not the problem, booting again without removing the comp from my desk, removing the cover, resetting the CMOS clear jumper,,etc etc. Thats the problem.

    So the question is:

What has Windows 2000 done to cause the power switch of the system to become non-functional on shutdown, and how if any way possible, can I reverse this?

    Thank you.

Ok sorry reread 1st post didn't catch that you have to do this each time.

    Ok new ballgame?

Go to device manager and click the 1st entry, should be just Computer, click the plus beside this tell me what it says.

Should say Advanced Configuration and Power interface (ACPI) PC.

    Then shutdown and turn off.

Disconnect all cables from computer except power, all, printers, network, except power video and mouse.

See if it comes up now.

    What now?

Thanks for replying Mike, but I'm already ahead of you here. Yes, the Device manager states ACPI PC, yes I already tried booting with nothing connected except bare essentials...same deal. No power switch function. Period.

Since this problem started I have twice now gone through the CMOS reset thing. I have tried to boot with and without network support. I have used RegClean. I disabled ACPI power management in the BIOS and W2K would not load past the inital bar screen, cycling endlessly between BIOS and said bar screen. I tried to load in safe mode and same result, endless cycle. The system will reboot just fine, all the way down to BIOS and back to fully loaded Windows with no problem, but if I shut it all the way down, I'm stuck with an unusable power switch.

I have enabled and disabled hibernate support, same result. I can find no reference to any such problem on the Microsoft support site.

Guess I'm just hoping someone has a clue.
