please help! search automatically opens on "all files and folders"

    os xp. persisting little niggle with search. search used to open with search companion with option of searching for video, picture and music files (very useful). laptop crashed badly and rebooted automatically. now when i click on search when using my identity it automatically opens on "all files and folders" with no search companion and consequently no video/picture/music option. i am unable to find the "change preferences" option anywhere. the really annoying thing is search works perfectly normally using my partner's identity. has anyone got any ideas how i can fix this small but infuriating problem?:confused:

    Your post intrigued me as I am in the same position re searching, but as far as I recall I set it up that way - no idea how, but I could find no way back - until today :)

    Did a search on Google and came up with how to disable Search Companion - clearly to re-enable should be the reverse. This worked for me (XP Pro + SP1, etc):

    Start Regedit

    Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER and in Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Explorer > CabinetState, set the value of Use Search Assistant to "yes" - without the quotes.

    My value was set to "no ", changing it to "yes" did the trick.

    Hope this works for you.

    Thanks for geting back to me Pete; this is my second posting with regard to this small but infuriating glitch and yours is the ONLY reply I've so far received to either query! I tried your route via regedit only to find there was no "Use Search Assistant" under "Cabinet State" only "(Default) ", "Full Path" and "Settings ". Any bright ideas what to do next?!:confused:

    Hi Mark,

    A couple of ideas "“ not sure how bright!

    Try the following "“ at your own risk "“ back up the Registry first.


    I’m not sure how valid this is, but log on using your partner’s identity, navigate via regedit to "˜Cabinet State’ and check the entry there. If there is an entry for Search Asst "“ I imagine there is "“ try the following:

    1. Right Click on "˜Cabinet State’ > Export, check that the Export Range "˜Selected Branch’ is checked and save to disk "“ to a location where your identity will find it "“ NOT "˜My Documents’ "“ they are your partner’s docs under that identity and will not be seen under your identity (?)

    Log in using your identity and navigate via regedit to "˜Cabinet State’ and export to My Documents (this is your back up of that registry branch). Locate the reg file saved from your partner’s identity and right click on it > Merge. If this restores Search Asst after a cold boot "“ fine "“ if not go back to My Documents and merge the file you just saved there and try the following:

    2. Navigate via regedit to Cabinet State as before.

    Right click on a blank area of the right hand pane "“ "˜New’ appears "“ select "˜String Value. "˜String value # 1’ appears in the Name List "“ rename it "˜Use Search Asst’ "“ without the quotes. Right click on it > Modify and in the Edit String dialogue box type "˜yes’ "“ without the quotes. Shut down and reboot. If this fails to deliver the goods go to your saved reg file and merge to restore that string as it was.

    Please post back with results "“ good or bad.

    Remember "“ at your own risk "“ if you don’t feel confident leave all well alone and suffer the inconvenience!

    A final thought - create a new identity for yourself.

    Or probably the easiest - if it isn't there, add it and then set the value to suit yourself. When logged in as yourself:

    User Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
    CabinetState
    Value Name: Use Search Asst
    Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value)
    Value Data: yes

    And note this is one of the few values that includes spaces. Also note that it is case sensitive so put in exactly as shown.

    Just open regedt32 and drill down to CabinetState then right-click it, select new, and enter the above information.

    'Fraid I was on the boundaries of my knowledge in this area and can't help further.

    Perhaps Newt has some more ideas.
