I now have AVG free version on a 98 machine - FAT 32 system and an XP Pro machine with NTFS.

On the 98 system I have, under program options, the choice to enable or disable a boot-up scanner.

No such option exists on my XP machine.

The same download was used to install the software on both machines.

Is there a limitation to NTFS that makes it impossible to scan for boot-up viruses or is this a limitation of XP's architecture?

Can't find any reasoning for the difference on www.grisoft.com - anyone have any ideas??

    Thanks,

    ICE

    Hi, Ice ~

Sure there is...been using it on NTFS for over 2 years. :D

    • Double-click on the AVG icon in your system tray
    • 'Resident Shield' tab
    • Check 'Check Boot Viruses'

    Bruce,

The tab you refer to does enable scanning for boot viruses - but that scanning doesn't take place until the OS loads and starts the AVG progam.

To get to the issue I'm refering to I right click on my AVG icon and select 'run AVG anti-virus' From there I go Service>Program settings.

On my 98 machine there are two check boxes present in the lower right of the window - one says "boot-up scanner" the other says "perform memory test at program startup "

Neither of these boxes are present when I go to the same menus on my XP machine.

I am interested in the "boot-up scanner" becauses it performs a scan before the OS loads.

It seems to be some sort of DOS scanner now that I look at it more closely - In that case it would make sense that it doesn't exist in XP since XP doesn't rely on a DOS core like 9x does.

I was just curious if anyone else had noticed this. If I didn't have two different versions of Windows I would never have noticed that it isn't present in XP.
    ICE :D
