Hello again everyone. Just recently my mouse has come to life and is acting on its own. The movement is choppy, not smoothe. Scrolling is frustrating. This thing acts like the mouse has a short.
I checked for viruses, worms, bugs, rats, ants, roaches, flys, cats, dogs, cows, monkeys ( I'm the only monkey I found! ) and other assorted misfits but came up clean. I uninstalled and reinstalled the mouse and drivers, changed mouse and drivers, but nothing worked. Also, when I click on the back or forward buttons I'm apt to go back or forward two or three pages with one click. Very frustrating. So bad in fact I even formatted and reinstalled but even that didn't help. So, any ideas? Thanks a bunch.

Quote: "Changed mouse and drivers" and the behavior is still the same?

Is the behavior the same when used in safemode?

While in safemode check device manager for dupes in the mouse category, com/serial ports, shared resource irq.

Is this a laptop or desktop computer?

A fancy smancy mouse with settings that can be applied via the control panel/mouse options?

    Usb...serial?

Drop the Ball out of the mouse!

Clean it with a paper towel dampend with alcohol. Wipe the mouse pad with this also.

The look inside the mouse's hole (I was tempted to say something else for this, really tempted) and you will see 2 small wheels and 2 bars that the ball move against.

Look closely and you will see a circle of lint and guh around the bars and the wheels will be dirty.

Use a toothpick to remove the circle of crud on the bars and wheels, then alcohol towel to finish up the job.

    Make sure it is dry!

    Reassemble and go!

Is it by any chance an optical mouse? Is it by any chance an optical mouse from Dell? If it is an opti, try place a white sheet of paper under it.

It might be like one i was working on the other day and it was super sesitive, you literally did'nt have to click it, alls you had to do was hover your finger over the mouse button and it would click on the object 2 maybe 3 times. LOL :)

Try having a look at the mouse pins at the back make sure that the pins ain't bent (just a thought)

Also make sure that there isn't a loose wire inside the mouse (If the mouse is covered under a warrenty then don't touch it or be very careful, lol)

    Hope it helps

I forgot to mention that I cleaned the mouse first. I thought that was the problem, always has been in the past. Cleaned it 3 times before posting here.

Safe mode was a little better. The mouse pointer wasn't as "sticky" as in normal mode but it still wasn't as smoothe as it should be. Checked the device manager and didn't find anything unusual. It's a standard serial mouse on a desktop computer running Win98 FE.

Checked the wires and pins, everything seems ok to these old eyes.

Don't rightly understand it myself. One click it worked fine, the next it didn't. I even used the search option on this site to see it anyone else had a similiar problem. Didn't find one.

So, thought I'd give myself a change and bought a Micro Roll-n-Scroll mouse. Good ole Windows wouldn't recognize it. Any ideas on what I need to do to get this OS to recognize this mouse? I've had the serial mouse long enough for it to be outdated (much like Win98 :) ) and thought I go for a change. Ain't never had mouse trouble before other than it needing a good cleaning. Any help here will be greatly appreciated.

I know that this is a dumb question, but I have learned not to assume anything. Did you install the software that came with your new mouse?

Yeah I did. At first I exchanged mice and restarted the computer just to see what would happen. Windows wouldn't recognise the mouse. Ok, so I shut down and exchanged again and started the computer. Installed the driver for the new mouse and shut down. Exchanged mice. Started computer. Windows wouldn't recognize the new mouse again. Now I don't know what to do.

I did find some of the trouble. I took the ball from the new mouse and put it in the old one and the scrolling is back to normal but the clicks are still erratic. I think this mouse is shot but now I need to get Windows to recognize the new one.

And I don't think any question or suggestion is "stupid" because no one knows what I have done or not done unless I tell them. I should have mentioned that I had cleaned the mouse and installed the new drivers but sometimes I forget to mention the little things. I guess I take it for granted that everyone knows I've done them because they are such basic steps. But no one knows whats been done until its been told. Also its the basic steps that are the solution most of the time. Just like getting this new mouse to work. I feel like there's some basic little thing I haven't done to get it working. I just can't think of it right now. (Hence the name "dopey" :) ) Someone will ask if I've done some little something that I should have known to do and I'll end up slapping myself on the head thinking I should have known that!

But thats the way it goes sometimes. :)

I'm not positive, but I think there may be a setting in BIOS to activate PS2 connections, you might take a look around in there.

Hi Kevin. I looked around but didn't see anything at all to do with ps/2 settings. Not on this computer anyway. This thing is five years old now.

I did, however, find some reported problems in System Information that I don't understand how to deal with. Hopefully someone here can explain to me what I need to do.

I started msinfo32 and clicked under Components - Input. I got the message "Wheel Mouse PS/2 mouse. This device has a problem: Code=24(0x18) This device is not present (which it is), not working properly (which it isn't), or does not have all the drivers installed ( which it should because I installed them ). See your hardware documentation manual (which there is none other than the plastic package it came with and the driver disk which has no documentation manual I could find).
    Alloc Resourses: Logical Configuration0
    IRQ: 12 Mask: x0000
    Driver: chimouse.vxd 3/14/2001 "

Under Software Environment-System Hooks I got the following:
Hook Type Hooked by Application dll paths
    System Msg. mousedll.dll LWBWheel C/pf/Brow
    mouse mousedll.dll LWBWheel C/pf/Brow

I have no idea what this means. Hope someone here can help.

Also under Problem Devices I got the same info that was listed under Components - Input.

    Under Control Panel-System-Device Manager-Mouse-Wheel Mouse PS/2 Mouse properties-general I have:
This device is either not present, etc. (same info as above).
Under the Driver Tab I have: Provider - Chic
    Date - 3/14/2001
To view details about the driver files loaded for this device, click driver file details. Under driver file details I have:
    C:/Windows/System/Chimouse.vxd
    C:/Windows/System/Vmm32.vxd (vmouse.vxd)

On the resourse tab I have: Wheel Mouse PS/2 mouse
    Setting based on: Basic Configuration0

    Resourse Type: Interrupt Request
    Setting: 12

    Conflicting Device List: No Conflicts

Thats all the info I could find tell me the mouse doesn't work although the drivers are installed. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Ahhh!

Appearently you never uninstalled the old mouse.

    Do this!

    Boot to safe mode.

    Go to start-settings-control panel-device manager-system.

Remove all mice the old and the new!

Remove any Unknown devices (look for Yellow ? mark) or yellow exclamation points.

Reboot once again to safe mode, do nothing then but reboot to normal mode.

    Now what?

HI Mike. I did just as you suggested but when I returned to safe mode I recieved the message "Windows Did not detect a mouse attached to your computer. You can safely attach a serial mouse to your computer now.

To attach a mouse to a PS/2 mouse port you must furst turn the computer off.

I restarted to normal mode anyway and recieved the same message and then got to wondering. A PS/2 mouse port? What the heck is that? I just plugged this one in the same slot the other one was in. Its the only mouse port I've got. Think this could be the problem???

Are you saying the mouse still works? Even with this message?

What did you find and remove under mouse and unknown in safe mode device manager?

And does the mouse work in safe mode, if not in full mode?

There are 3 basic kinds of mouse connections

    1. oldest is serial, connector is oblong has nine pins

    2. next is ps2, which is a small round connector

    3. newest is usb, flat blade connector

    Which do you have?

No the mouse doesn't work, I'm using the one thats giving me problems. I have an oblong connection with an adapter for the small round plugins. It came with the computer when I bought it.
This is the original mouse I'm using now. It works half ok since I replaced the ball but clicking is shot. When I click on the back or forward buttons especially I jump 2 or 3 pages at a time. Also when I click on links and such I sometimes have to click several times for it to take. That's why I bought another mouse.

But Windows doesn't accept this mouse. Its a Micro Roll-n-Scroll from Chic. It didn't say anything about being a ps2 connection and I assumed it would work. But I can't get it to.

I tried to install it from the Control Panel- Add New Hardware using my keyboard to navigate through. The wizard searched for and found the mouse. After searching, the wizard asked "Is the divice that you want to install listed below?" Yes or No with a circle beside each for me to click and choose. I chose Yes because it was listed. The wizard told me to "Select the device that you want to install and click next." I couldn't navigate to select the mouse using the keyboard. I could only go to the y/n options or the back button. So I went back and asked to select the hardware from a list. I chose the proper mouse and recieved this warning: "You are using other hardware that conflicts with the hardware you are about to install. The hardware will not work properly until you resolve the conflict. "

I don't know what to do to find the conflict. Or even if this would help since I'm thinking I'm using a serial port to install a ps2 mouse. But I do know that the drivers got installed by looking in the device manager in the control panel. But unless the port in the back of my computer is wrong for this type of mouse I don't have a clue why windows won't detect it.

    Herein lies the problem!

You are trying to install a serial mouse since it is pluged into a PS/2 converter.

This would work normally but you have an advanced function mouse that will not work thru the converter.

This (the converter) does not work even with some standard mice.

    You are wasting your time.

Go to Walmart or Radio shack and get a true serial mouse that does not need the converter.
