Is there a tiny download that can make IE6 java-enabled. To be able to run java applets, I had to download Sun java virtual machine, about 10mb, too huge. Is there any other way, for casual users, to be able to see web pages that uses java applets. Or is there no other alternatives?

sallam--Well, you certainly are a busy poster today.
I assume you have tested to know that you do not have MSJava installed.
    http://www.albany.net/~rubergd/example1.html or
    http://www.javatester.org/
Over the past year, MSJava has been part of various other downloads from MS, but most recently, because of patent problems (mentioned in the second site above), MS is not offering it.
However, MSJava still is available at this site
    http://www.biologylab.awlonline.com/ms_javavm.php
You click the here in the second paragraph and then, after downloading and installing that, the appropriate update from the last paragraph. (You cannot get MSJava from Windows Update anymore for the reasons mentioned, so the links in the first paragraph will not work.)
It is still a large download (6+MB). There is no other way to get MSJava.

Thanks Welshjim, you've been so helpful today.
Ok, I'll just stick to my Sun version, it is said to be better that MS's
I just thought I might get a hang of a link to a smaller download, to mention it in my support posts of my web site.
    Thanks :)

    Hi, Sallam ~

Here you can get the Original Microsoft Virtual Machine. It is considerably smaller at 5.4MB.

I am certainly not defending M$ by any means, but I am not sure how you came to the conclusion that the Sun version is better. M$ certainly did not allow it to work seamlessly with IE. MSVM seem to operate smoother and without process/resource hanging/hogging in our experience.

Actually MS posted the newest and latest version of their JVM yesterday on the Windows Update site. It is a revised version because of a security problem in the virtual machine. It is 5.1 Mb.

BruceKrymow--The Windows Update site for me (Win98) is
    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
May be different for other versions of Windows
Jayt36--Interesting. I never thought that the many recent fixes to MSVM (MSJava) might be complete downloads of MSVM rather than patches for a version already existing on the PC. Has anyone tested this out? The latest patch certainly is big enough.

According to MS "Yes, Microsoft VM build 3810 is a new release of the Microsoft VM.

How can I tell what version of the Microsoft VM I’m using?

Here’s how to determine the build number you’re using:

    Select Start, then Run.
On Windows 95, 98, or Me, type "command" (without the quotes). On Windows NT 4.0, 2000, or XP, type "cmd" (again, without the quotes). Hit the enter key.
In the result command box, type "Jview" (without the quotes) and hit the enter key.
In the topmost line of the resulting listing, you should see a version number of the form x.yy.zzzz. The final four digits are the version number.

Once I know the version number, what should I do?

Use the table below to determine the right action.

If the version number is. . . You should. . .
3809 or less Apply Microsoft VM build 3810. (Available from Windows Update).
3810 or higher Do nothing. You’re using a version that’s already protected against these vulnerabilities.

And I got it from the same link as above, the Windows Update site. :)
