spybot

have just noticed spybot on boot up will come up with a window on the desktop entitled check in progress, it will always go through a check of 4783 checks and down the bottom right corner it counts down 1.37 secs,
in the cetre of the window is a message...
"spybot search and delete is checking your system, please stand by "...
also there is no cancel button, nor a shutdown icon in the top right corner.

i am running ver 1.1 and went to their web site to find there is now ver 1.2 so i came back and went into add remove and when selected to remove spybot... it did the same check procedure
lastly i right clicked on desktop icon to see if there was an option to configure... nope
totally puzzled and first time i have'nt been unable to add remove a prog, look forward to any reply, thank's

 

are you trying to stop Spybot from running on startup, or remove the program?

to keep it from running, go back into settings and look for the item under "System start " that says...

Automatically run program at system startup

you'll want to make sure this is not checked.

this is true in v1.2

but a similar, if not identical, setting exists in 1.1 also

You may have already updated to 1.2 if you routinely download and install Spybot updates using the online updater feature of the program.
Updating 1.2 over 1.1 will remove the ability to uninstall the program from Add/Remove ... attempting to uninstall will do just what you mentioned, start the program! The "fix" (for me) was to download the full version (spybotsd12.exe) and install, then delete the old 1.1 folder and all it's contents (save any recovery files first). There was supposed to be an update to add an uninstall option via online updater or manual download but I haven't been on the net-integration forum for awhile and I'm not on my own machine right now.

Also, about configuring the program settings, version 1.2 stupidly creates an "easy mode" that has no settings options! Just use the programs menu shortcut for 'advanced mode' or open the spybotsd.exe file directly from inside the C:\Program Files\Spybot folder.

 

'stupidly' is an unfortunate choice of words. patrick kolla is aware that the easy/advanced mode switch is not very intuitive, and from what i read on his forum, he will attempt to address that... perhaps in another release, when he gets a break from providing us all with free spyware detections.

Sorry about the choice of words but that "easy mode" version of the program that opens after installing 1.2 was not a good programming decision... lots of people couldn't find the settings after installing 1.2 and there IS no easy mode/advanced mode switch within the program ... you have to close then reopen the program using the start programs menu "Advanced mode" shortcut. Just wanted to clarify that you should not worry about uninstalling 1.1 using add/remove programs after installing 1.2 using the full installer, spybotsd12.exe.

Seems that the process of running version 1.2 overwrites all the 1.1 registry entries with 1.2 entries, so that all you have left to do is to delete the 1.1 Spybot folder. Details here, in my posts on the Net-integration forum:
