    Hello!

Until yesterday, I was using IE 5.00 and all was well. The browser was then upgraded to IE 5.50, and that's when this particular problem appeared:

When browsing, I like to use the "open in new window" command for hyperlinks (using right mouse button to give the pop up menu) so I keep the originating URL in an IE window to go back to if necessary. However, with my current version of IE 5.5 this doesn't work any more.

Sure, it opens an IE window, but the throbber just throbs (the animated image at the top right corner of the IE window) and nothing is placed into the pane that shows web pages (it appears transparent). However, if I click on a hyperlink in the normal way (i.e. with the left mouse button) then things run normally.

How can I fix this so that a URL can be opened in a new window once more? This is really irritating me now...

    Thanks in advance,

    Dodge

See if any of the links on this page lead to a solution for you.

Thanks for the reply, I've checked it out but can't find the solution to this problem.

Someone else at my workplace also has the problem, and he said that he has to click the Stop button and the Go button before it works. It's as if the new window isn't loaded with the required URL before it is launched! Weird...

The information on this page is what I used to clear up the same problem on my system.

    Thanks for this additional info.

My system is P3 with Win87SE. Your URL mentioned Windows 2000; will it still work with my system? (I don't want to try it out unless I'm sure, cos knowing my luck it will further mess up my browser/OS).

However, I checked the File Types part of Folder Options, and found the URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol entry in there twice!! Should I delete one of those entries, in case they are conflicting/confusing each other?

Anyway, I'll try it out on Monday (about to start weekend now!)

    Have a good weekend!

    Hi, Dodge ~

The file type 'URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol' is not duplicated in there, but rather one is normal HTP and the other is HTP w/ privacy.

    Hi Bruce,

You're right - even though the File Type is URL, one entry is for "with Privacy" and one is without.

But doesn't this cause "conflicts "?

    Have a nice day!

    Dodge Hi

Most likely its even more basic than all that.
Try this on ie's toolbar go tools internet options, advanced,
browsing section uncheck reuse windows for launching shortcuts

If already unchecked toogle it a few times --each time using apply ok
    I keep it unchecked
Or have you already done this ?

" " "Until yesterday, I was using IE 5.00 and all was well. The browser was then upgraded to IE 5.50, and that's when this particular problem appeared:" " "

I was under the impression ie 5.5 could no longer be gotten
where did you get it ?

    Thanks Lonny,

I tried unchecking the "reuse windows" option in Advanced, and the problem still remains.

Another thing to note is that when the "Open in new window" command is used to view a web page, the title bar of the window says "No page to display" or something along those lines. This makes me think that IE is being launched without any URL to show (parameter?).

I reinstalled IE 5.5 this morning (it is on a CD at work, which is an old CD, which explains why I have it) but this didn't sort this problem out either... and before, I used regsvr32 to reregister the DLLs listed in http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers2.htm#blank_windows. As you are probably aware, this didn't work either.

I'm at a loss. What can I do now?

    Hi Dodge
Check it again close all IE's go back and uncheck

When I had those problem, Im probaly way off base, But I went
with all IE's closes oe's to to flder options and set up windows to
not reuse windows also, on win ME there is an
in folder options [X}browse each folder in its own window
then on the view tab of folder options there is
[X] launch folder windows in a seperate process

Anyway thats the way i have it set up now, you should also toggle thos settings to
Since ie and explore are intergrated more and more with each
upgrade... well Im probaly mmmm off base but it wont hurt to try

    Questions IE version details ?
    OS version ?
do you have any security programs third party ?
    what av ?
Most times we find out its a popupblocker.
    Latter

You've all been very helpful, but I'm still having the same problem. I've tried all your suggestions, but to no avail.

    IE: Version 5.50.4134.0600

Security programs: Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition (on company network)

Apart from these, I've nothing else hiding in the background (that I'm aware of) and our IT Dept is quite good at preventing security breaches.

I use IE 6 (w/latest security updates and I use medium security). My OS is Win98SE.

When viewing a webpage or an e-mail message, and I want to open a link in a "new window ", the new window pops up and just sits churning away until I hit stop and refresh to view the page. Previous versions of IE worked fine.

I did a search on Microsoft's site for a fix, but from what I can tell, they say that this is a known problem with IE 6. Has anyone out there heard of this or also have this "bug "? I appreciate any response.

I'm assuming you don't have a popupkiller installed, or some application blocking Javascript, that might be responsible for this?
    Reply=========================================
I'm not using a popupkiller or know of any app that is blocking Javascript. Do you know of any app's that could be doing that?
    ==reply========================================
Well, the latest version of Zonealarm Pro can, Adsubtract Pro, Norton Internet Security, and the list goes on,and on.

But if you're not running one of those, just follow the steps in my little list.
    =============================================

Go to IE tools/internet options/programs and turn on the check box for IE to check if it is the default browser. Shut down and restart IE. When it asks to be default browser, say yes.

Now go to Start - Run (type each line below separately, then press OK)

    regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
    regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
    regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
    regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
    regsvr32 Msjava.dll
    regsvr32 Browseui.dll
    regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

Note: you should see a brief message after each entry that the dll has been successfully registered.

Now reboot, test IE, and repost with your results.

    If no joy, do this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC.
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk'.
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file’s location, which is probably in the Win98 folder of your installation CD-ROM (typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System, and click OK. System File Checker looks for the file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been successfully extracted'.

Reboot, and tell us whether that solves your problem.

If often does in IE 6.0 installations in Win98.

NOTE: before doing that, make a copy of Oleaut32.dll and save it outside your Windows\System directory for safekeeping.

    Lonny,

Thanks again; I've done the bit you mentioned below:

However, IE didn't seem to be affected by setting/resetting the "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser" checkbox. It was originally checked, and I unchecked it and restarted the PC and used the link in the BBS email. No change (it went straight to IE). I then checked the checkbox again, restarted the PC (to make sure) and tried the email link again. Still used IE without asking for confirmation.

Does this mean that IE is corrupted somehow?

Very confused and frustrated now. :(

    Hi Dodge ~

I am not familiar with that OS ;)

If you have earnestly attempted ALL the methods prescribed herein thus far, have tried re-registering all the '.dlls, then your only options remaining are:
    • Try going to 'Control Panel' and click on the 'Add/Remove Programs' icon. Then select 'IE5.5' & choose 'Add/Remove' > choose the repair option
    • Install IE 6 SP-1
    • Upgrade to XP SP-1

    Bruce,

    Win87SE ???  D'Oh!!

;) Must have been a typo, I s'pose, or possibly a subconscious message that I think it seems like 1987 technology sometimes...

A colleague of mine upgraded from IE 5.5 to IE 6.0 recently, and his browser started behaving in the same way as mine. So, even with IE 6.0, the problem of the browser not opening a page in a new window still occurs.

My IT Department won't allow me to upgrade my OS to XP - they're very distrustful of things new, and are bored of fixing things to do with Windows.

Anyway, thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll try again the suggestions given above, before reinstalling everything again.

    Have a nice day!
