I am helping someone with a hard drive crash. She got a new drive and I loaded her programs. The problem is she can't find her driver disk. This is a K7S5A mother board with everything except the video on it. I have found all of drivers online and they work except for one. I am having a problem with the sound. I loaded drivers for C-Media9739. They installed but I get this error. "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" In device manager there is a yellow exclamation mark on the device. "C-Media AC97 Audio Device "

Boot to safe mode, and remove all audio devices, and anything in "Other Devices" from device mangler.
Restart, and then the driver should load.

Is the sound enabled in BIOS?
Is there any other conflicts in device mangler?
Can you manually assign resources for the audio?
Can you see what it's conflicting with, and maybe change it's resources?

The sound is enabled in BIOS? There aren’t any other conflicts in device mangler. The resources tab says "This device isn’t using any resources there is a problem" and I can't change anything.

Have you booted to safe mode, and removed all the sound stuff from device mangler like I said?
Did you install the correct driver when prompted?

Sorry, I did that before I found the 9738 driver. I also did a search for all the CMUDA files in system32 and a search for C-Media in all files in inf and saved them to a temp folder so they would not interfere with the installation of new drivers. I am not sure which sound chip is on the mainboard. Do you know where it is?

I think that I read some plase that the K7S5A also had an SIS sound driver.

Could we be looking at the good old fashioned no show in DM IRQ conflict between a Modem and the Sound ?

I doubt it Bill the modem and sound are on the mainboard.

That would make no difference if the Modem ( or something ) happens to be using an IRQ that the Audio wants.

If all is well you should have audio as soon as you install Windows. At least the basic audio.

No sound at all. Not even system sounds. I'll remove the modem from the mangler and see what happens!

Well I removed the modem and still had the same problem. I found the sis 7012 drivers and they loaded but same error.

Well I did it. I got the sound to work. This has been a challenge for me. I found a great site for drivers. http://www.amptron.com/asp/drivers.asp I d/l’d the XP drivers and no go. But I noticed that on March 11, 2003 all the other operating systems were updated. I know that XP is similar to 2K so I d/l’d that and sure enough they worked. Thanks everyone for your help.
