Never had this happen before...while reading a web page an icon for java console popped up in the systray. Every time I clicked on a link a bell rang. Right clicking on the icon provided no way to get rid of it. Clicking on it opened up a thing called a java console. I never saw it before and clicking on it could not get rid of the icon or the incessant ring of a bell every time I clicked on a link.
What is this thing and what is it for...and how do I get rid of it once it takes it upon itself to pop up in the systray...?
    Confused...? Yes I am.
TIA for any info for this annoying problem...

If all's well it's in you configurations screen as well..

There you can de-activate it, if you want to, cause you'll need it if you want to see website's containing java normally

Configuration screen??? What is that? I have never seen any screen like that.
Why is this java icon popping up all of a sudden when it has never done it before, and why does a bell ring every time I click on a link...this also has never occurred before. This is a completely new development that has occurred out of the blue for no reason.

    Still confused....

    OK Yankee,

I'll give it a try, though I'm not used to play 'helpdesk' in English :D

The Java engine (that's what that popup is about) is something you could need in order to view certain websites.

In Internet Explorer, it's more or less integrated, in the latest Netscape it is seperately installed, you even could choose not to install it.

You should be able to disable it in your configuration screen.

Click on 'Start', 'Settings', 'Configuration screen', there you should find an Icon about the Java Console, if you doubleclick it, you'll get a screen in which you can disable the console.

You also could remove it completely, by going to the configuration screen again, by 'Start', 'Settings', 'Software' (or 'Add/remove programs' depending on your operating system)

In the list op programs there will be a 'Java runtime environment' something like that.. Remove that piece of software and the icon in the systray will be gone..

    Hope this helps you...

    Thanks for your reply...

I don't want to remove the java runtime environment as it is part of Metrowerks...and I need it for something else.

What I don't understand is why it is popping up in Netscape when I am viewing a website? I don't ask for it, it is doing it on its own, and then I can't get it to go away. It has never done this before on any version of Netscape that I have run.
Maybe it is NS7.01 that needs to be uninstalled and use 4.78 instead? Is this some bug in 7.01?

    Dixie,

I believe vlietinho refers to the Control Panel:
    Start|Settings|Control Panel|Java Plug-in

In the "Basic" setting, disable "Show Java in System Tray ".

As to the sound, look in the Control Panel|Sounds. What sound events have you enabled?

In the java icon there is no *disable icon in systray*. That option is not presented. The icon has disappeared on its own, just as it appeared on its own.

But, a bell rings every time I click on a link in a website. I looked in sounds but there is nothing there that appies. And there is no list of any enabled sounds. The sounds are only what were there originally and I suppose MS put them there in the OS. I have never changed anything in the sounds...
The bell does not seem to ring on every website, but it rings on enough of them to be a real annoyance.

After I uninstall 7.01 and install 7.02 the bell ringing will cease.? I hope so!

Thanks for your responses...this does not seem to be happening to anyone else so I will blame MS..it is probably their fault anyway... :D

    Hi Ladies,

Have either of you installed the Sun Java Plugin (JRE 1.4.1_02)?

If YES, then you can access the Java Console from Start|Settings|Control Panel|Java Plugin
Under the "Basic" Tab you can configure the disable/enable Plugin to show in the System Tray.

If NO, you may access the Java console from Tools|Web Development
Click on "q" to Hide the console

If the Java Icon is in the System Tray, and you DO NOT have the Sun Java Plugin installed, you can right click the icon and select "Disable ".

    Java Plugin Console Information

The Sun Java Plugin really isn't necessary for Netscape Communicator.

    Ramona :D

Hi; I found the java plugin console where you said.
So as you said I can disable it in the java plugin console and my netscape will be ok, right?.
I read the link for the java plugin console
and understand nothing. But I don't think I need an explanation anyway.
thank you for your help and time.

    Hi caraloca,

To answer your question, yes, you can disable the Java icon in your system tray. When the Java plugin is called, you won't see the icon again, but it will still work. Java is enabled in Preferences|Advanced.

BTW, your signature interests me, and my High School Spanish gets me as far as "Science without conscience is" ... then it is something about the soul? Could you translate ?

    Thanks,

    Ramona :D

"Science without conscience is the lost of the soul ".
when I was younger, many years ago, there was a rock radio show and they always said that, I found very interesting and more inthis time that we are living.
Thank you and all the people again for your help and time.

    Hi Ramona and all...

I finally solved the mystery of the ringing bells...LOL!
It was signalling that a popup had been suppressed. I unchecked *play a sound when a popup is suppressed* and now there are no ,ore bells ringing on the websites...:D

    Thanks for the responses...
