    I want to open the Control Panel from a shortcut so that it is displayed showing icons (with no left pane) and not keep reverting to "details" but I still want to keep my explorer windows to details view, I used to be able to do this in 98 by using a very complicated target address in the icon properties for Control Panel.

    Also in explorer the status bar keeps switching off after setting all views to be the same?

    Anybody have any ideas how to do this ?

    I can't be for sure because I'm not sitting in front of my XP Pro workstation, but see if there is an option on the toolbar in Tools -> Options that says something like Remember each folder's view setttings.

    I have experienced the same thing concerning the folders view of Control Panel changing from Icon view to Details view and the status bar turning itself off. I posted a thread a couple of weeks ago concerning the Status Bar issue, but as of yet have received no reply. Because both of these issue seem to come and go at will I believe that they must be a programming bug in XP.

    As for your problem with Control Panel, I have repeatedly used "Remember Each Folders View Settings" as well as "Resetting All Folders" neither of which fixes the problem completely.

    But the interesting thing is the longer the system is running the less frequently these two problems seem to occur. Go Figure!

    As for your question concerning the folder view of Control Panel;

    You can set all of your folders to show no left pain, by going to Folder Options and on the General Tab selecting "Use Windows Classic Folders ". But this change is applied to all folders, not just the folder you happen to have open. I am not aware of any way in XP to make this change on a folder by folder basis.

    :)

    What you describe is exactlly what my problem is, I guess we will have to wait until someone identifies the bug and issues a fix, in the mean time have you looked at the following site at :

    http://www.tweakxp.com/tweakxp/

    It is worth keeping an eye on this site as there is a possibility that a fix may appear on the site.

    I've visited that site myself in the past when looking for answers, but thanks for the tip anyway.
