I can ping and tracert all the sites i wish. That wrks fine. But when i open explorer i get nothing. DNS resloves the name but it just hangs trying to make a connection.

Using windows 98 and IE 5.5. No Logon servers. Just two stand-alone machines that need interent access through building network. Static IP's.

goombah--Not completely sure I understand what the situation is. You say
"when i open explorer i get nothing ".
What are you expecting to get? Your home page? Have you entered something in the Address box? Have you clicked on a hyperlink?
Here are two possible pages with ideas

If you cannot access these pages let me know and I will copy some of the info here for you. (However I will soon sign off and will not be back until tomorrow.)

What I mean is that any webpage that i try to go to will not come up. It is like i am not getting out of the firewall. But I can ping websites just know http traffic. i do not control the firewall or any of the DHCP servers.

When mean by any website i mean any: Yahoo. Lycos, Google, anything.

Wait a minute! The winsock is likely the problem and the fix will hurt nothing even if it is not the problem.

    BUT!

By moving do you mean they are now hooked to a different ROUTER?

    Are you using DHCP?

Do this first if you have not done the Winsock fix, if you have do it anyway!

    msdos command prompt

    ipconfig /release_all

    ipconfig /renew_all

NOTE: anyone else reading this thes are for 98 & ME only for 2k or XP these commands are different!

    Reboot recheck!

    OK then Ipconfig not nessesary!

    Do the winsock fix!

    If that don't do it,

then find and rename any hosts or lmhosts files temporailly and reboot.

    Figured it would!

Now let me tell you something else, it didn't get sick and die.

    Something walked on it!

Better do the below and get rid of the cause! It is usually the CommonName spy/adware that does this but others can too.

    Spyware and adware removal

    SpyBot
    http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download

Run this twice delete all it finds, "ALWAYS" run this before AdAware.

Leave all it wants to leave after the second run.

    AdAware 6.0
    http://www.lavasoft.com

    Run only after SpyBot!

Make sure to configure to Max settings, all files and compressed files.Delete all it finds

    BHO Demon
    http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm

A BHO is like a autostart/startup that only runs when you run the Browser.

This program runs stand alone no install is required post me the items it finds other than the below. Normal entries here would be Acro..... (Acrobat Reader) or Nav.... (Norton Anti virus).
