Ever since I downloaded a "Microsoft Patch" I have had trouble accessing websites or their link pages. It is the old.. "Error 404, page not found" consult Microsoft.
It definitely seems to only happen with Netscape.

I saw somewhere the patch fouled up Activex and Java for Netscape (I'm using Netscape 4.79) and there was supposed to be information on correcting this.

I have trouble even getting into the Microsoft site now and with Windows 98, the message is we are not giving help on this programme,,,,contact your supplier.

I can't seem to find anyone else that has posted this problem.

I'm running Norton Internet Security 2003, but it didn't seem to cause problems before the download, so I don't think that it has anything to do with the current lock out of sites. I can use Internet Explorer 6 and get into the sites with NIS 2003 running.

Is this a Bill Gates conspiracy?

Would it be advisable to upgrade to Netscape 7..?

I tried the Netscape 6... and went back to 4.79 as so many problems with that version.

    Help please.

    Thanks:confused:

    Hi Gloria,

Which Microsoft Sites give you the 404? If it's Windows Update, that is a given.

Netscape doesn't have ActiveX. That's a proprietary Microsoft component.

Which Microsoft Patch do you think caused this problem?

We need more information in order to get to the root of your problem. Sounds more like a Microsoft problem than Netscape....

Microsoft 404 errors in Netscape Browser

There are so many that I can name many off the top of my head!

    www.danier.com
    www.newenglandancestors.com
    www.shoppingchannel.com

I bet close to a hundred as I search genealogy, etc.

Danier and Shopping channel are okay on the main site, but when viewing sub site views on Danier and enlarging a picture displayed of item on Shopping Channel, the error message is there!

www.newenglandancestors.com gave several messages from several links and when I tried to join I got a loop of
security notices....... "you are leaving the site" ok, no
"this is a secure site that can't be viewed by others" ok, no, more details. "this is a secure site that can be viewed by others" ok, no, etc.

Hitting okay just causes it to keep repeating and on going "BACK" to previous page, I received,,,microsoft error 404,,,,a vicious circle that caused me to shut it down in IE6

I couldn't access the site at all without error 404 on netscape.

    Hope this helps.

Regarding the activex and java message regarding Netscape.
It was in Microsoft article on the ITWorld Canada.
It clearly (to me) stated that the security patch that Microsoft told everyone to download was affecting these parts of Netscape and said to go to microsoft for instructions on "fixing" in Netscape.
    itworldcanada@itworldcanada.com

Now I can't find the article or help on microsoft support.

I may be way off base here, but I remember reading it and thinking now if I could just get help to do these repairs.

    Microsoft 404 Errors and Netscape

After much searching, I found a site "deep" within ITWorld.

This is an example of the type of information I am looking for. These pieces of information don't seem to get out to the public the way they should.

Microsoft patch can lock users out of Web sites

    By Joris Evers
    IDG News Service

A recent Microsoft Corp. security patch for Internet Explorer (IE) can lock
users out of certain Web sites and Microsoft's own MSN e-mail service,
    Microsoft said late Wednesday.

The issue affects the cumulative patch for IE versions 5.01, 5.5 and 6.0
released on Feb. 5 and rated "critical" by Microsoft. The software maker
released a software fix to correct the bug, according to the revised MS03-004
    security bulletin at
    www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-004.asp.

Users, primarily consumers, were unable to access certain Web sites
requiring user authentication after installing the patch, Microsoft said. This
issue in itself does not present a new security vulnerability and the original
patch does fix all the vulnerabilities it is meant to, the Redmond, Wash.,
    vendor said.

Only users having trouble authenticating to Web sites or accessing MSN
e-mail need to install the new fix, which is available on Microsoft's security
    Web site, the vendor said.

The cumulative patch announced in MS03-004 includes all previously released
patches for Microsoft's Internet browser and fixes two newly discovered
vulnerabilities involving IE's cross-domain security model, which keeps
windows of different domains from sharing information. In the worst case,
these two flaws could enable a Web site operator to load and run malicious
    code on a user's system.

    Hi Gloria,

I don't believe the February Cumulative Patch for IE was intended to do harm to Netscape specifically. I have installed the Patch and have no problems accessing the sites that you have listed above.

I did note that the New England Ancestors site have posted this notice:

    Computer System Requirements:

Cookie settings must be set to medium; click here for instructions.

JavaScript settings must be enabled; click here for instructions.

Netscape users must upgrade to current version of Netscape or use Internet Explorer when using NewEnglandAncestors.org. This website is not compatible with versions prior to Netscape 6.1.

When I clicked on the MS Technical site link that you posted, I did get a 404 error. However, when I used my own link, from the MS Bulletin I received on this patch, I had no problems??? Try THIS LINK to see if it gives you a 404.

Did you know that MS will send you Technical Bulletins for each of the Security Updates? You can subscribe to the service HERE

The Security popups you were getting can be changed in your Preferences:

    Click on the Security Tab
    Select Navigator
Under "Show a warning before: "
    Enable/Disable settings
