MS Word Document name changes when opened

Somehow when using View, File Types, file edit, etc. -- I did something that changed the actions of MS Word.

A document named, prices.doc, for example is supposed to open with the name prices.doc at the very top title bar.

Now, however, after messing up the file type, etc. all my documents when opened show document 1 , 2, etc. as the file title at the very top.

When I close, I have to save as and overwrite the original document.

I should only have to answer the question -- "do you want to save your changes "

How do I repair this ??

In File Types, make sure that the DOC file type is set to Open as the default action instead of New.

I don't know what I would have done without your help.

I appreciate your excellent answer which of course worked, and I appreciate your quick reply.

I was really in a bind ..... will not change any "advanced" settings again.
