I have two computers connected over a local area network through a hub, one running Windows 98 and the other Windows XP. Both are connecting to the internet over different telephone lines. On Network Places on the Windows 98 computer I can open, and work on, all shared files of the Windows XP computer. On the Windows XP one the Windows 98 computer does not show up. I have gone through the Connection Wizard several times but nothing works. Any suggestions anybody?

    XP home or XP pro?

Log off the Win98 then log back on with the "EXACT" same username and "EXACT" same password as you are using on the XP. And you will have to have a password on the 98.

I did everything that you recommended, i.e. have the same user name and password on both computer, but I can't get it to work. Only the Windows 98 computer recognizes the Windows XP (home edition) computer. Any other ideas?

    You said the magic word!

    XP "HOME "!

So now we can do it.

    But first some prelims.

Go to win98 machine. Rt click network neighborhood-properties then click add-protocol-microsoft-netbeui.

Note this will add 2, remove only the one that says dialup adapter.

Then dbl click netbeui and the click advanced, at bottom put check in make this the default protocol.

Then click identification. Change whatever the workgroup is to MYHOME.

    Exit and let it reboot.

    Now to the XP.

Send me a direct email to mflynn@lexcominc.net so that I can reply and attach the netbeui protocol which is on the XP Pro cd but not the XP home cd. After you recieve the protocol the directions for installing follows

Note your %SYSTEMROOT% is probably c:\winnt\

Copy Nbf.sys to the %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\Drivers directory.

Copy Netnbf.inf to the %SYSTEMROOT%\Inf hidden directory.

Click Start, click "Control Panel ", and then double-click "Network Connections ".

Right-click the adapter you want to add NetBEUI to, and then click Properties.

On the General tab, click Install.
Click Protocol, and then click Add.

Click to select "NetBEUI Protocol" from the list and then click OK.

Restart your computer if you receive a prompt to complete the installation.

If it wants to rebbot here say no then go to control panel-system-network identification.

    Change this workgroup to MYHOME.

    Now reboot!

After rebooting if it does not browse to the other computer rt click network neighborhood or places and find search for computers!

Let me know in a week or so if you have time! Smile!

Mike, thanks! You are a sweetheart! I got it all worked out, did not need to install the NetBeui protocol; it somehow worked.
