I'm looking to network 2 home computers, one with XP Pro, and the other with Me.

The problem is I have a cable modem thats using my nic, and if I try to install a second nic I get some major problems. I haven't tried this in a while so I can't be more specific, but I remember the last time I had to format and reinstall.

I do have a Teltrend NiQ 840 router (Photo's and spec's here), and I also have a D-Link DFE-916DX (Specs and Photo's here), both of which came without manuals (Donated by my friends boss :D )

Does anyone know how I can network the computers? Would I have to contact my ISP and give them the router Mac address (I'd prefer not to do this since I'd be breaking the ToS if more than 1 computer can use the cable modem.

    Thanks for any help

Go buy a Linksys 4 port Cable/DSL router.
It has a Mac address clone and very easy to setup.
I think they are about 69.00 at Radio Shack.

    Thanks for the reply.

Can anyone suggest a way of doing it using my current hardware. I've recently lost my job :( *sob* *sob* and I really can't justify spending more money on the computer to the wife.

If you had another network card laying around you could set up a proxy server on the computer that is currently hooked to the Cable modem.

Then download Analog X free proxy server:
    http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm

Just add another netowrk connection on the computer with 2 NICs and use the 10.10.0.1 or 195.0.0.1 internal IPs for your internal network.

The XP system should take a 2nd NIC without any problems.

You have a couple of good routers but unfortunately they are made for a different enviornment and won't help with the broadband networking.

The app mention above will or you could just use the ICS (internet connection sharing) that is part of the XP & ME install packages.

I'd suggest sticking to an internal/local network IP in the 192.168.0.x or 192.168.1.x range though with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

The 10.x.x.x is private so will work but it is lots more real estate for your PCs to have to look thru and not necessary since you can use 254 different PCs with either of the 192.16.x.x. addresses.

Thanks for the help so far guys. I'll attempt putting a second nic in again. I'll just be sure to backup first this time.

    Thanks again.

You could get a Linksys or similar brand router only, about 30-40 bucks. Then plug the cable modem into the router's wan port and use the uplink port to your existing hub. (the hub you have is a good one)

    Hopefully, problem sorted.

Well folks, after discovering that my PC didn't have an ISA slot for my other network card, I resorted to phoning up my ISP and they are willing to send me a new USB modem so that should sort my problem out.

    Thanks for all your help/suggestions/idea's

Once again I couldnt've done without you all.
