For some reason my cdrom seems to have stopped working. If I click on D Drive in My Computer it just tells me to "Please insert disc into Drive D," when I already have. I have had problems recently as when playing games it seems to stop responding.Running on XP.

It may be a dying/dead drive.

Could just need a clean of the laser eye
Does the CD drive spin up when you insert a disk?
Have you added any hardware lately like a DVD player or a usb removable drive memory stick?
check to make sure your PC hasn't renamed your CD drive another letter like E

    Hi, lorna ~

Do you mean CD-R/RW and not CD-ROM?

When you click on 'My Computer' do you see 'CD-ROM (D:)' (or similar)

The first thing you should attempt is un- & re-installing your CD:
    • Right click 'My Computer' > 'Properties' > 'Hardware' tab
    • Click 'Device Manager' button > double-click 'CD drives' > right-click your CD device > 'Uninstall' > 'OK' at warning
Exit 'Device Manager', reboot and it will reload your CD device & native drivers. See if that cures your problem.

If this is a new unit, you may need to visit the manufacturer's site to download the latest XP signed driver once this is done. I would gamble that there is nothing wrong w/ the drive and doubt the lens is dirty.

Thanks everyone but I did have a dead drive. I installed a different one yesterday and everything is now fine. All the problems I've been having for the last month or so running CD ROMS (mainly games) have now disappeared. The processor was new (from a computer fayre) and still under warranty but I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of sending it back.

Thanks for letting us know, Lorna. It still could have been a dirty lens, unless the motor quit altogether. But as you say, it isn't worth the hassle sometimes to collect on a warranty---sometimes just the postage is more than a new drive. Not to mention the wait.

But at least now you can use Pingu :D .
