    Hi,

I'm running XP HE and would like to be able to make all the contents of a directory read only. The dir includes sub-dirs and files. I only know how to make individual files r/o by going into their properties box. Is there a handy way to apply this to the whole thing at once?

    Hi, Marty ~

    • Right-click on the folder (not the file) > 'Properties'
    • Under 'Attributes:' put a check in the 'Read-only' box
    • 'Apply' > The 'Confirm Attribute Changes' window pops up
    • Put the radio button in either 'Apply changes to this folder only' or 'Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files'
    • 'OK' > 'Apply' > 'OK'

Thanks Bruce. Don't know why I didn't see that myself; sun must've gotten in my eyes. :)

    recursive attribute settings in W98?

Marty and /or bruce.. any idea on how I can do this recursice resetting of Read-Only file attribute in W98? Surely there must be a way.. I don't know how they all got set; maybe when I copied them out as I had to save/restore them after a hard disk replacement...

    Hi Abbey,

You would think there'd be a way to change the attributes from the shell to a parent directory and everything below it. Otherwise you might have to (heaven forbid) try and do this from a windows exec, or more likely write a program.

If you copy files to your hard disk from a cdr, they'll always have the read only attribute. So, when you copy them to your computer, copy them all to one folder. Then open the folder you copied them to, click on the first file in the list to highlight it, hold down the shift key and click on the last file in the list. This will highlight all files in the folder. Right click on one of them, choose properties and remove the read only attribute. It should remove it from all of those that are highlighted. Then move them to whatever folders you want to put them in.

Zander - thanks for the info.. now have the 'problem' fixed... got a .vbs from another subscriber (see AttribTree in W98 thread) and it worked perfectly. I didn't think to try your method.

As long as you got it fixed it doesn't really matter. Thanks for posting back. :)
