Sorry about the length of this post but I don`t get any
easy ones.I have two computers, one I use to
experiment with the other is the one I use daily.
They both have Win 95 B from the same CD installed.
I installed Win 98 upgrade on the experimental computer
and after some assistance from this board got everything
up and running. Sound, video, modem, etc. worked good.
There`s not a lot of difference in the two computers, the daily user
has 128 MB RAM, and a 366 MHZ CPU, the exp. comp.
64 MB RAM, and a 166 MHZ CPU, both have plenty of free
    hard drive.
I installed Win98 upgrade on my daily user, got everything working
except the modem, it will not accept either modem i.e., the one that was
on it originally or the one from the experimental computer with`98 on it.
Either one works fine on the experimental comp.
When I attempt to use phone dialer or get on the web it tells me,
Some one is using the line or another program is.
The modem does dial up,there`s an indicator light that comes on
on the phone cradle when the line`s in use.
I have two hard drives on my daily user and I`m tempted to
format c and remove windows and install both 95 and 98 from
    scratch.
Anything wrong with that Idea? I`ll save everything I want to keep
    on the d drive.
I`m working on the theory that something in Win 95 is where the
problem is.If that`s completely off the track, I woudn`t be surprised!
    As usual, Thanks.

In 98, boot to safe mode, remove all modems, and com ports in device mangler.
Uninstall dial-up-networking from add/remove in control panel.
    Restart, and let things install.
    Reinstall modem.
    Restart.
Go to Start > Run > type in: inetwiz
Make a whole new connection to the net.
This will reinstall DUN, and any settings left over from win95 (even if 95 had the DUN 1.3 upgrade) will be removed, and replaced with the (much better) Win98 ones.

Thanks for the sudden service. I think I can handle all that but I have a question.
You tell me to run inetwiz which I assume is Internet Wizard?
I have connected to the internet many times but have always used the CD furnished by my ISP. It installs IE 5 and does the configuring with a minimum of input from me. All I need to know is the dialup number my password and user name and real name.
I don`t know If the installation CD is 95 specific or not, I`ll call and find out.
Also I assume the Internet wizard will install IE6? I can live with that, just curious.
I`ll be back and let you know how I get along.
    Thanks.

No, the wizard will simply install DUN, and prompt you for the settings for your ISP. Generally, all you need is the phone number to dial (you have that) your username (you have that), your password (you have that), and possibly the DNS servers (probably not though, call and find out for sure).
That way, you're using the built in native Win98 stuff, and not any 3rd party dial-up settings, or browser, or Outlook.
    The standard Win98 stuff stays.
If there's any discrepancy between the ISP's CD and native Win98 stuff, then the 98 stuff should stay, thus eliminating any problems that will arise from using their CD.
You do NOT need the CD.
Win98 is FAR different from Win95 in it's internet and TCP/IP protocalls. They're the same basically, but the code used for 98 is much more advanced. Using a Win95 ISP setup disk on 98 is asking for big trouble.
Any questions you don't know the answers to in setting up the inetwiz, phone the ISP, although it's almost too easy.
If you choose to update to IE6 etc. after that, it's totally up to you.

I will not stand for any disparaging remarks about Reboot. Right now I figure he`s about 12 feet tall, A hero.

Tomorrow when things don`t work right I may have a different opinion. I`m like the dying cowboy that the parson asked to accept the Lord and renounce the devil. I ain`t in any position to be agitatin` any body!

    Thanks to all.

    Thankyou. :D

I like to take the AOL (and other "free ") CD's, and zap em in a microwave until they warp out. Drill a little hole, and hang em on the Xmas tree ;)

    p.s. I'm not 12 feet tall, nor a hero.

I don`t think that this computer is destined to have Win 98 as an OS.I followed your instructions, and get the " lines busy try again later message ". Both of these Modems refuse to work on this computer under Win 98. By the same token both modems work on my spare "experimental" computer under the same `98.I can`t see where the internet browser has anything to do with the modem not working. It appears to me that it should work with the Windows phone dialer whether or not IE is installed. But it won`t.
Is there anything wrong with formatting the C drive and starting from scratch, or will that just be another exercise in futility?
I know it`ll be quite a bit of trouble to do but I`ve used up a bunch of time and patience installing and uninstalling `98.
Just as if I have anything better to do!

If you must, you could try a reload.
I still think there's some difference in hardware that's not allowing the modem to install correctly, or something in DUN that's not set up right.
Are you positive you put in your ISP's phone number correctly?
Maybe if we knew exactly what modem this was, a driver update might be in order, something that Win98 can actually use.
It's time for a few more details, because if the modem works, it should keep working, regardless of OS, unless it's so totally out of date that there are no drivers for it.

    Hey Reboot,
I got thoroughly PO`ed at it over the week end. Formatted that C drive, installed win95, upgraded to `98 and at the present I have every thing working except the sound which I`ll get to after I get everything else back. I`ll probably be back but so far so good.
I`m on my way to see if the `95 Drivers I`ve got for my HP820Cse printer will work. Good luck to me, and thanks again.

I know exactly how you feel.

Sometimes, there's just no way around it, and to save frustration (and hair) a format/install just makes it easier, although sometimes longer because of software installs.
