I have a system that I have upgraded to XP pro from ME. Has worked fine for months. I recently converted the HD to NTFS.
Now when I try to install some software (Eudora for one). It fails stating it cannot find/access a temporary file. I ran the same install on my laptop (with XP pro and ntfs (slao recently upgraded)) and it installs fine.
I get the feeling certain permissions won't allow me to install.
I also have problems trying to uninstall other software, the unwise program states it can't find the installation.log, but it is there???

    Any ideas/suggestions??

As far as I know you should be logged on as Administrator to load programmes.

Did you upgrade to XP overtop of ME ? Or clean install XP ?

If overtop and then you converted to NTFS that might be the problem with both installing and the error message that it can not find the unistall file. I do not think ME is NTFS compatable.

Maybe more so if the program was installed in ME.

This may be a Wild Guess. But it is an idea I have.

I myself have had problems when converting from 16bit to 32bit AFTER the OS was installed.

I did install over the top of ME, but the failures of not finding the log files are with software that I loaded a few days ago (upgraded to XP a few months back, ran the convert process about 2 weeks ago).

So the software I loaded to evaluate will not unload because it claims to not be able to find the installation log file, but it is in the directory (in program files) of the recently loaded software. I was able to start unwise from the directory for one package and it uninstalled, but for another package it wouldn't, I had to manually remove the directory and the registry entries ( I think I got them all????)

You said "It fails stating it cannot find/access a temporary file "

It may be the permissions issue as you suspect. Try taking ownership of the entire drive. That will often cure this sort of annoyance.

Isn't the 1st time that happenes to me (but not on XP yet...). The unwise installer isn't the best around.

Then do a manual remove of the evaluation software!

    Here are the steps.

Look at the folder it is installed in. May be something like

    c:\Program Files\Netscape etc
Find the family name of the main executable, may be something like

    Netscape.exe, netscape.cfg etc.

    Note thes names.

Then use my computer to browse to this Netscape folder, hilite and delete the entire folder.

Then do a disk search for these names and delete them also, like this

netsca*.* del all it finds that is related to this folder/name.

Now to clean the registry of these items down load 2 programs.

    RegCleaner and RegscrubXP.

    Registry and System cleaners

    RegCleaner http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml

Look in first 2 cols for these names and tag and remove them, additionally if you want, look for programs you thought you uninstalled or removed, these are the dregs left by the uninstaller.

Also tag and remove any that you are POSITIVE are not supposed to be on your computer.

After removing these go to the top Tools-Registry Cleanup-Do them all. Delete all it finds.

    RegScrubXP http://home.carolina.rr.com/lexunfreeware/RegScrubXP/RegScrubXP.htm
    NOTE: W2K and XP only!

Select RegScrub finds problems and remove all it finds.

Bingo! Now do a cleanup of temps etc. reboot and install the new prigram.

    Mike

PS After this proceedure if there is still an add/remove entry in control panel go back into RegCleaner to the "Uninstall Menu" and remove this and any other dead entries.

    Thanks,

I went through and cleaned up the registry and a few other things and it seems to be functioning now.

Was able to load, test and discard disappointing software packages.
