    Hi (Ramona),

    I guess you probably know the answer right away.

    My question is;

    How to setup Netscape mail so that a click on links in mailmessages, starts IE instead of the Netcape browser.

    Is this possible? And if yes, how?

    thx in advance

    Hi vlietinho,

    To make Outlook the system default:

    Close Netscape:
    Open Notepad | File | Open
    Browse to:
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt
    (depending on your OS)

    Back up your prefs.js file
    Once this is done, open the prefs.js file (using Notepad)
    Copy this line, and paste it into the prefs.js file, making it the last entry:

    user_pref( "network.protocol-handler.external.mailto ", true);

    Save the file, close Notepad.

    Next, go to:
    Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options
    Click on the Programs Tab
    Outlook Express should be entered in the Email Location.

    Hi Ramona,

    Thx for your swift reply. But what you've answered was not what I'm looking for, it's just the other way around...

    I want to use the netscape mail client, in combination with IE.

    So when I'm browsing with IE, and I click on a 'mailto' URL, the Netscape mailclient is opening (correct) and a blank netscape browser screen as well (not correct, but not really a bother)

    But when I receive a message in Netscape mail, containing an URL, a click on that URL must start IE, instead of the Netscape browser (not that I don't like the browser, but there are a lot of sites not correctly programmed for Netscape, shame!)

    Thx

    Hi vlietinho,

    :eek: :eek: :eek:

    To make Netscape the default Mail Client:

    Edit | Preferences | Mail & Newsgroup Settings
    Enable: Use Netscape Mail as the Default Mail Client

    Open Windows Explorer
    Click on View | Folder Options | File Types
    Ensure that Netscape is listed for:
    URL: MailTo Protocol

    In Internet Explorer Click on
    Tools | Internet Options | Programs
    Ensure that "Netscape 7.02 Mail" is listed in the Email location

    Check the Registry to ensure Netscape is listed as the Default Mail Client:

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\
    Your_Mail_Client_Name

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\
    Your_Mail_Client_Name\shell\open\command

    Value: "C:\Program Files\Your Folder Name\YOUR_MAIL_CLIENT_NAME.EXE"

    Hi Ramona,

    I'm sorry, but this is still not what I meant. Probably due to my poor English ;-)

    Those settings you mentioned are allready in place.
    So Netscape mail is the default mailclient, and when I'm browsing with IE, and I click on a 'mailto:' , the Netscape mail client is activated and opens a new mail message window, and this is fine.

    However, when I receive a mail message containing a link, a click on that link still activates the Netscape browser, instead of the IE browser...

    So how can I setup my system to make the Netscape Mailclient open IE, instead of its own browser when clicking a link from within a mailmessage?

    thx again.

    vlietinho,

    What a kind and patient person you are, and no apology for your English is necessary. I was trying so hard to make one or the other of your browsers the default, and NOT addressing your issue at all... You stated very plainly in your very first post what you were trying to accomplish. :rolleyes:

    Add this script to your user.js file (if you have created the file). If not, then add the script to your prefs.js file. Ensure that Netscape is closed, and you back up the file before editing.

    user_pref( "network.protocol-handler.external.http ", true);

    Hi Ramona,

    It works fine, but I just found something weird though.

    If I have the Netscape Mailclient openend, and I click on an URL in a mail message. IE starts and opens that link. (that's fine!)

    If I click from within the mailclient on the netscape browser icon, in the statusbar below then both IE and Netscape browsers are started. IE opens my homepage. Netscape opens an emtpy page, though the URL of my homepage is shown in the location bar.

    Funny though when I close IE, and press 'home' in the Netscape Browser, IE opens again, with my homepage.. :D

    Probably a small bug or something, doesn't really matter.

    thx again.

    Hi Ramona,

    I've been working a couple of days now, with the suggestion you made to adjust the prefs.js file with;

    user_pref( "network.protocol-handler.external.http ", true);

    But there's one thing that's a bit annoying.

    Now when I receive a message in Netscape mail and that mailmessage (for instance a newsletter) contains pics that are not embedded (no, there's no war going on in my mailclient :( ) but linked, those pics aren't showed in the mailmessage, but IE opens and loads that picture...

    So in the mailmessage I see crosses on the place where the pics should be, and I have 4 (if there are 4 pictures in that mailmessage) instances of IE opened, each instance showing 1 picture.

    Is there a way to prevent this from happening that you know of?

    thx again

    Hi vlietinho,

    You are having a terrible time, aren't you. What are your settings in Preferences|Privacy & Security|Images? It would be so nice if it were this simple.

    If you have configured Netscape to accept all images, then I'm not at all sure that you can stop this. I will have to get back to you on this one.

    You were mistaken when you said that there was no war going on in your computer. I could tell you some harrowing stories, involving browsers or especially music programs.
