I have installed XP pro on a machine that previously dual booted between 98 and 2000.

    The motherboard is a soltek-75drv5

There are two cd drives attached to the secondary ide slot, one DVD set as master and a "liteon" cd writer set as slave. BIOS detects both drives successfully.

XP will not detect the Cd Writer unless I unplug the dvd. Am I missing some aspect of XP that does this? I have not installed any cd writing software or SP1a yet, it is just a bare XP install with m/b and graphics card drivers.

I have also tried using different types of IDE cable

There are no clues on the m/b or cd writer websites and this is my first attempt at XP.

    Any Ideas?

    Thanks

Suggest you try making the CD writer the master and the DVD the slave. I recall a previous thread in which InCd would only work with the CD as the master - this may be totally irrelevant, but easy to try.

Thanks for youir reply. Whatever combination od MS/SL/CS I tried the writer would not be recognised.

As soon as I added SP1a, problem solved. I have no idea why this should happen, but at least it all works now.

    Thanks
