Thanks to all who have helped here in the past. It seems that every program I run that wants to connect to the internet (rpcss and including all browsers, all IM's, and file sharing programs, as well as ftps and even winamp for some reason) give the identical error that I list below. So I have no way to connect to the internet. Any ideas would be helpful or else I must break down and take it to a shop. Thanks again for all the help.

RPCSS.exe rpcss.exe Remote Procedure Call. Required by windows for programs to communicate with each other on networks/different machines. Originally for NT only but now installed with Win98/98se. Under Win98/98se, a program may need it to communicate with other components of itself. You could delete the program but if any abnormalities occur soon after then reinstall. Under NT, deleting this critical system component will disable the OS. For a more detailed explanation see here

    http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm

could be coused by anything almost.
Have you installed latest drivers for video card or intergrated.

    Use msconfig to troubleshot uncheck

Go to start run type msconfig hit ok

Scanregw, Systray, the two Load Power Profile entries, State Manager and PC Health are the only needed items.
see if problems still exist if not recheck one at a time .

I wouldnt go that route of updateing unless you are very apt computer literate. instead use windows update when youre able.

Im not convinced this would be the problem
invalid page fault's can be coused by almost anything, spyware for instance and as mentioned before video problems.(I assume) sound device's maybe even a faulty memory chip.

Do you have Spybot or Adaware ?

use Msconfig uncheck everything except what I mentioned before and av programs,
If no go do a file search for host (the one without any file extension's) rename it to HOST.1 or similur

You may have to first go to folder options and check to show all hidden files and folders, I think this can be done with any explorer window in win 98 toolbar by useing the [view] dropdown list, whereas in win me its on the tools dropdown..

You havent answerd bluejay's questions yet?

    Try not to get stressed
