    I'm running Windows XP with Internet Explorer 6.0 and a couple of days ago whenever I try to enter a site that has a username and password imbedded into the site it shuts down on me. What can I do to fix this and is there a way to trouble shoot it. IE is not listed in the control panel>Add/Remove Programs, I've already tried that, I've also tried to uninstall but can't get it completely uninstalled either, I went to Microsoft.com and they say that IE is embedded in XP version and don't give instructions on how to uninstall it or repair it. I know this is a hardware board but I can't find any other forums to ask this question. Thanks in advance.

    Check out the following article which describes how to Repair Internet Explorer.

    http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsXP/howto-03.html

    Of course this may not work if you have already attempted to, or have partially removed IE6 from your system, but its worth a shot.

    If this doesn't work than you might want to consider downloading a new version of IE6 in an effort to reinstall it overtop of the old program. You can download a copy from;

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp

    Before doing this though you might also want to check out the following Knowledge Base Article from Microsoft concerning problems that may be encountered when trying to reinstall IE6 on an XP system that came with IE6 preinstalled.

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q304872

    Hope this helps. :)

    Thanks for the links and I tried everything that they suggested and still get the same problem, here's an error message that I get sometimes

    The instruction at "0x77f531f5" referenced memory at "0x871c537d ". The memory could not be "read "

    I get this error sometimes and other times it just shuts down. Any clues?

    Was XP preloaded on your system, or was it an upgrade? What system are you using? Are you experiencing any problems with the operation of XP or do the problems appear to be effecting IE only?

    Have you tried the XP Restoration Process? The following is the overview of System Restore from the XP help files;

    "System Restore Overview "

    System Restore is a component of Windows XP Home Edition that you can use to restore your computer to a previous state, if a problem occurs, without losing your personal data files (such as Microsoft Word documents, browsing history, drawings, favorites, or e-mail). System Restore monitors changes to the system and some application files, and it automatically creates easily identified restore points. These restore points allow you to revert the system to a previous time. They are created daily and at the time of significant system events (such as when an application or driver is installed). You can also create and name your own restore points at any time.

    Notes

    Restoring your computer does not affect or change your personal data files. It is a good idea to back up your data files periodically. For example, you might copy your data files to removable media, such as a writable compact disc, once a week.

    For an overview of the other recovery technologies provided with Windows XP, see Recovering Your System.

    For more information about System Restore, see Understanding System Restore. "

    Access System Restore by clicking on Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Once the program starts you will be asked to select a restoration point, select a day or two prior to when you first experienced the problem.

    If this doesn't fix your problem, and if XP came preinstalled on your system than you should have a system restoration disk, which would allow you to try and reinstall your system software, which would include not only IE but XP as well. The drawback to this is that you might lose some or all of the software or data that you've loaded on your system since its purchase, or upgrade, so its important that if you decide to go this route that you make backups of all the data that you don't want to lose, prior to trying a system restoration.

    If XP was preinstalled on the system I would also suggest that you first contact your system manufacturer to see what other suggestions they might have and if nothing better they should be able to provide you with the proper procedures for completing a system restoration using the disks provided with your system.

    Most manufacturer's have technical support options available on their website, for example Gateway, which is the system that I use, now has Technical Support Chat on their site which allows you to talk back and forth with a Support Tech, much the same as in done in MSN Messnger, or similar type programs.

    Hope these suggestions are of use and that you're able to fix your problem.
