Hi: I'm having a major problem with booting to Windows. When I start the computer it goes to the password screen and loses mouse and keyboard functions. The cursor flashes in the password but cannot enter passowrd.

Also after several attempts to enter password when turning computer on again I get a blue screen with something like problem loading windows and windows shutting down to prevent damage to the computer.

I also have attempted to insert Window XP disc and attempt to perform repair but computer will not boot from CD Rom and goes directly to the windows splash screen or warning screen. Any help would be appreciated

    Sincerely,
    Henry Rondeau

Thank you for the reply. In answering your question once I hit F-8 during boot up it goes to the choice screen. If I hit safe mode I am then sent to the blue screen saying that something has occurred and windows was not able to load and was shut down to avoid damaging your computer. Once there, I am not able to go any further. Any suggestions.

    Thanks for any assistance.

    Sincerely,
    Henry Rondeau

You seem to be dead in the water!

An overlay install may fix this. An overlay install will not erase your files or settings.

But it has to be done correctly!

Mainly there are 2 repair options and you "DO NOT CHOSE THE FIRST ONE!" There is another repair offered you will select the second repair option.

    So here goes!

    1. Boot the computer using the XP CD.

    2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see this:

This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

    3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

Do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R ", (do not load Recovery Console).

    4. OK the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing installations.

    5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. This is the "R" Repair to chose!

If Repair is not one of the options, cancel at this point and get back!

    6. Xp will now copy files and install then reboot, don't hit a key to boot from CD when the message appears.

Let setup continue, it may reboot once more. Finally when you are back up, then remove the CD.

All SP's and fixes will need to be installed again, but this is another story. Sufice it to say do not do so immediately. Run this way a day or so to see if there are problems.

When you do do the win updates and Sp's then there are steps to do them correctly also. Which include cleaning up and stopping programs etc.

Thanks for the walk through. You are correct in that the system was so out of wack that an overlay installation was required. Howver, in my earlier post I noted that the computer would not boot from the windows XP cd even though I set the boot sequence in the bios.

To fix this problem, I went to my second computer, logged into Micro soft solutions web site and downloaded the floppy xp-boot disks. I then booted the computer with the floppy's and re-installed window's xp as you suggested. I was unable to use the repair option but it allowed me to remove the old windows files and replace them again. The method you suggested saved a complete format and loss of valuable files. I guess backup is the key word.

Thanks again for your assistance. I find this site as well as the individuals that reply and moderate this site to be very generouse with their time and expertise to solve problems such as mine.

    Sincerely,
    Henry Rondeau
