I had to do a complete restore on my Compaq pc about 2 weeks ago. I reinstalled all my software, then when I went to reinstall my Canon MultipassC555, I could not get the pc to recognize the USB port or the hardware device. It would list it under the device manager as "unkown device" with a red mark through it. I would then remove it from my device manager and shut down pc then reboot and windows would show it is recognizing new found hardware and said it was building or installing a driver base. But, then again when I went to install the multipass printer, when I would get to the point on the installation disk where it promt me to connect the usb cable to the pc and the printer, a windows message was supposed to appear saying it was installing drivers for printer, but nothing would ever happen, it wouldn't continue with installation. When I would go back and check the device manager, there it would be again where my pc recognize the usb port but labeled it as "unkown device" again. I can't figure out what is going wrong. The multipass printer worked fine before I did the restore, the multipass is working, I can still get faxes and copy things but I cannot print anything from pc. It is like the pc won't recognize the device port. And yes, I have checked under printers and there is no printer listed because I can't get one installed to begin with, so there is no printer listed to be removed. Can you help? Thank you for your time.

Hi Winnie and welcome to the boards. I don't know much about Compaq's but by any chance did the restore disable the USB port in the BIOS. Can you go into BIOS and see if you can "enable" the USB port?

    Hi John B.
Thank you for your reply. I guess I should have put intermeadiate user down, I don't think I am that experienced at some things on my pc. Ha!
Well, you have mention something that I haven't tried yet. And this could be it, because after my restore, that is when the problem started. Only thing is though, how do I check my BIOS. I have heard a lot about the BIOS and I thought about checking into that but didn't quite know how to do so. See, that is where I thought I was pretty knowledgeable and I guess I am not. Ha! Do I go through the device manager again?
    Thanks for your help. :)
