Am using Win98FE with most updates, but would like USB 2.0. How can I go from Win98FE to SE using a Win98SE OEM full version disk? My Win98FE came with my Dell Pent. II, 450, computer. Will SE install over FE? What should I know before I try to install? I would like not to lose all of my already installed data.

    Thanks

    Marvin

    Marv6,

Not certain about this at all.

All I know is that I wanted to explore a Win 98SE full install disk. When I put it in the drive, & it auto ran before I could stop it, it said it had detected an older version of windows, & wanted to know if I wanted to upgrade.

Naturally I said no, since all I wanted to do was explore the disk.

I would not presume to tell you that all it would do is upgrade the existing OS & not destroy anything though, because I didn't try it.

I know this isn't much help. Just telling you what it asked me.

Oh yes! If you dare to try the 98SE disk for upgrading the 98FE, get a backup program & make a backup image of your existing OS & burn it to a CD. Then experiment if you want to.

Of course make the rescue disks for the backup program as well. They would be needed in case you needed to restore the original 98FE with all your stuff on it.

Drive Image is what I use, but it isn't free. I am not aware of any free ones.

I have found that many times the only way to learn is experiment, but back up first. :)

Thanks for the reply Delores. I am afraid that since Dell installed my OS Win98FE that it might not let me install the SE, but I do want to upgrade in order to get the USB 2.0 capability. I will explore this further.

I have SE and it does NOT have USB 2.0 support built into it. You have to install the drivers for the USB 2.0 card (or onboard your mobo). If those require SE then you would need to ugrade, BUT backup you system first and copy all of you DATA and other critical stuff to CD or something, for a simple copying back to HD.

    Then go for it.

There is no valid reason you should not be able to use SE on your current system, though you do need to have a FULL win98se CDROM (not those screwball 'rescue' CDs).
