    I don't understand why but .... whereas I used to have a top OE toolbar with (something like) Send/Receive on it (that I would click to get new mail), now that is gone and I now have a few nested arrows to the left of FILE, which, if clicked give me a drop down menu with, among other items, a Get Mail option.

    Also I seem to have lost the three boxes in the top right corner.

    How can I restore my sOE system to my previous configuration.

    Thanks.... wdc

    Try either: right clicking on a blank spot and putting a checkmark beside toolbar......or going up to view...then layout......and seeing if something has come unchecked.

    Daizy: Neither suggestion restored the format I used to have.

    But I can easily live with what I have. Except for the lack of the 3 top right boxes (minimize, ...). In there place I now have the MS Windows scroll icon. And when I left clicjk it nothing happens; when I right click it , I get a menu with options Standard Window, Address Bar, Links, .... How can I get back the Minimize, Restore, Close symbols?

    Not sure about the minmize....etc, but is it possible that you have drag and combined your various toolbars onto one line or positioned some to far to the left or right. These toolbars are separate and dragNdrop-able. Sometimes they appear to missing or messed up when they've been moved by accident, without you noticing.

    Try to grab it [them] and drag it [them] down to a lower level to separate any bars you may have combined. They'll have a white vertical bar that when the mouse is postioned over, will turn into a double arrowed cursor. When this happens you can move it left to shrink, right to expand,down to separate, or up to combine.

    Daizy: What is a screenshot (not in Help index) and how do I take it?

    goddez1: I get the two-headed arrow and get action when I move it left and right but not up or down. Am I doing what you suggested?

    The variety of options and drop-down menus in W98 must be close to infinite. If there is a logic in using them it sure escapes me. Thanks for your patience. ... wdc

    If after sending Daizy the email attached screen capture of OE and she hasn't been able to come up with anything new...
    Here's a few more ideas:

    Is OE the only application that has missing minimize.restore,close icons?

    May be remote since this problem usualy results in weird characters or numbers but:
    Problem could be the file for the Marlett TrueType font has become damaged (this is a hidden system file by the way, before you rush off to look for it in the Fonts folder). The Marlett font is used to display scroll bar arrows, Maximize and Minimize buttons, option buttons, checkboxes, and various other controls in Windows. The MARLETT.TTF file is located in the Fonts folder, along with other TrueType fonts; it's hidden but visible in most programs' font list. If the MARLETT.TTF file is damaged or missing, numbers or garbled characters appear in place of these controls. [Still worth mentioning?????]

    First of all check that MARLETT.TTF is there and that its Hidden attribute is set

    1 In My Computer or Windows Explorer, right-click the MARLETT.TTF file in the Windows \Fonts folder and then click Properties.

    2 Click the Hidden checkbox to select it and then click OK. If you need to replace the MARLETT.TTF file, it's located in the WIN98_52.CAB file on the Windows 98 SE CD-ROM. Use SFC or manualy extract it into the Windows Fonts directory by copying EXTRACT.EXE from the Windows CD (or Disk 1 of the floppy install set) onto your hard disk, and then type the following (assuming you have a CD) at a command prompt:

    extract <your cd-rom drive>:\win98_52.cab

    marlett.ttf /1 c:\<windows>\fonts

    Now set the file's Hidden and System attributes by typing the following:

    attrib +s +h c:\windows\fonts\MARLETT

    If, after replacing the MARLETT.TTF file, numbers or garbled characters still appear in place of controls, try deleting the ttfcache file in the Windows folder: it will be rebuilt automatically when you restart the computer. Problems with the MARL.ETT.TTF file can also be caused by exceeding, or even approaching, Windows' limit of approximately 1,000 fonts.

    ===========
    Could also try setting your properties/display options to a default if using some customized settings that could be causing display problems. A customized theme with odd color combos or icon sizes and spaces to far from the norm has caused some odd results in the past.
    ==============

    If this hasn't happened in more than the last five [24hr] dated shutdowns and if using win98x, you try the old "restart in dosmode" scanreg /restore command. This will allow a restore of a registry backup that may predate toolbar problem.

    Ann: Thank you for your detailed analysis of my problem(s).

    But (after making lots of small changes) my remaining problem is much more prosaic. It relates to the sizing of my screens. Whereas I used to get the standard three boxes in top right corner (minimize, restore, close), now I get the MS flying window symbol.

    Buit if I put my mouse as high as it can go just above the symbol I get a popup "Close" and if I click it the screen <does> close. Similarly I can bring up and activate the minimize and restore buttons if I move the mouse a bit to the left.

    I hope I ahve been able to describe the problem.

    BTW .. I have not sent Daizy the screen shot because I don't know how to do that.

    Thanks again. ... wdc

    It sounds like you have somehow managed to put the top of your window into the black zone, for lack of a better description, of your monitor.
    *Have you made sure "Device Manager" is showing the correct monitor and display adapter for your OS [computer]?

    *Are you using an acceptible refresh rate?

    *Have you tired using the buttons on your monitor to adjust horizontal/vertical hold?

    *Tried a right click on the "TasksBar "_task button, for the window your using, and played with the maximize, restore, resize options?

    *Can you Restore or resize this window so you can move it down far enough to see if the top of the window is actually there?

    =====On a different note======
    You havn't been playing with some registry settings, tweakers or application skinners that allow customizations, have you?

    Also sending Daizy screenshot: This is how I'd do it....

    *Open application in question [Outlook]
    *On keyboard: push the button/Key that says "Print Scrn SysRq "
    *Open "Mspaint "
    *On menu toolbar select "Edit "> "paste "
    *On menu Toolbar Select "File "> "save as "
    *In "Save_In field ", use dropdown arrow key to select "Desktop "
    *In file name field, type in a "name of your choice "
    *In "Save as Type field, Use arrow dropdown to select giff or jpg
    *Hit the save and exit paint.

    You now have a gif or jpg screenshot of outlook on desktop.

    *Right click this and select "Sendto ">" Mail Recipient "
    *A Composed popup has attached file, all you have to do is type in Daizy's email address and any thing else you wish. I assume you two have communicated via help-net private email and have already exchanged pop mail addresses that allow attachments.
    *Click Send and presto!, the deed is done.
