Running Windows400.950 95B plenty of hard drive RAM 128
    CPU 350MHZ.
98 upgrade installs smooth as glass `til last boot up.
An error has occured while setting up C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\shdocvw.dll This error has been logged installation will continue.

Desktop comes up OK, in My computer every thing is normal except there`s no CD ICON. In DeviceManager there are 4 CD ROM`s one FX320S and three CR4804. I remove them all, Reboot and have the ICON in My computer and one CR4804 in device manager. That is the proper one.
On the way in on this boot I get,

There is a problem with your settings the adapter type is incorrect or the current settings do not work with your hardware.

The Video adapter is S3 VISION 968 PCI

To agitate further my Dial up settings are not correct, Error 630, but the modem works fine on Win95.

I assume the `98 upgrade disk is OK `cause I just used it to Install `98 on an older computer that I keep to experiment on, and every thing appeared to be normal.
I uninstalled `98 and here I am, back to my old faithful ? ,95.

I`m on my way to XP but I wanted to stop and play with `98 while my wallet heals up.
    Any instructions?

Before you started the Upgrade did you set the Video back to a standard VGA setup ?

And did you make sure any anti-Virus was completely Disabled.

And most Video cards do not use the same drivers for 95 and 98. That is why it is best to set it back to VGA.

And as to the Modem problem. That may be just what it is. A MODEM problem. An Internal PCI Modem is well known for creating problems when changing or upgrading the OS.

That is why I quit using them years ago.

Did you start the install from the HD or boot to a Floppy with CDROM suport. And boot to it from a power off state.

I have not had any good luck at all with upgrading or re-installing from a HD boot up.

    No I did not.

    No I did not.

    No I did not .

    See how this sounds;
I do all these while I`m in Windows `95.
I`ll remove the video adapter in device manager, I don`t see an uninstall for AVG in the Grisoft folder so I`ll remove it in add remove programs, on the assumption that the disable function might let it sneak back in sometime during the `98 install.I`ll boot up with a `98 start up disk with CDROM support and run the CD `98 upgrade install disk from the dos prompt. I`ll remove the modem in device manager, and then
I`ll physically remove the Modem card and worry about it when I get `98 installed.
Am I on the right track, or still out of line?
    Thanks

Reads like basicly the right track.

`ll remove the video adapter in device manager,

You do not want to remove the Video card. You want to go to Display and CHANGE it to a Standard VGA setup. Removing it from The DM will allow it to possibley reinistall it as it was which is what you do not want. In other words you want to Change Drivers. And reatart 95 at least once with the new drivers.

Uninstalling the AV software is the better way.

Removing the Modem sounds good. Again restart Windows a time or two with out it.

Before you do anything and IF you have room on the HD ( hopefully another partition ) make a new folder of a name you choose ( I use options ) and copy the contents of the Win98 ( only ) folder on the CD to the new folder.

Then Shut down ( power off ) reboot to the 98 SUD.

Change things so they point to the folder where you copied the Win98 Files to and type SETUP. That way you will not need to always inserting the CD if needed. Windows will find it.

Just be sure that the new install goes into the existing Windows folder.

    Good Luck
