I'm in Australia and have been having a problem for sometime with my connection. The main issue appears to be that I live on a farm in a rural area, meaning that my landline is some 450 metres from the telephone junction box (undergropund cable from the hole in the ground). I only have the one line, altho there is provision to have up to 5 lines.

Some details are: the modem is a Dynalink 1456VQE, 12 months old; I have downloaded the latest drivers from the Dynalink website;I divert my phone to my mobile (cell) phone when I go online (as advised by the ISP); I run a script for the modem [at&u1*i14] which seems to help; the connection speed reports 33.6.

Generally, all is OK (albeit slow) for about ½ an hour or so, then the connection drops out with the message "...the server has been reset ".

The ISP advises that my actual line speed drops as low as 4800, and recent history has never exceeded 28800. The ISP has also advised that the problem appears to be the distance between my house and the auto-switching exchange box.

So, my question is obviously, what can I do?

    Thanks in advance

Jack - first off, welcome to the forum.

Next, I think your ISP is dead wrong. That particular error message almost always means a problem at the server end. Maybe it will drop a slow connection or something similar.

The fact that your connection holds for about the same length of time before it drops is a further indication that blaming the phone company may not be quite right.

    Can you immediately reconnect?

There could be some tweaks you could so on your PC to stop the behavior though. I never messed with dial-up enough to gain much expertise with it but there are some on here who did so hopefully they'll chime in.

    G'Day Maroochysprings,

Check with Telstra , you may be on a pairgain system, this will limit your connection speed.
450 metres is not excessive for a rural connection here.
Do your neighbours have similar problems?
