I have been using OE forever on my pc at home, but have access to OUTLOOK 2000 as a component of Office 2000. I have been comtemplating migrating form OE to Outlook simply for the Personal Info Management features of Outlook, as I obviously do not need all of the business components...

Can anyone advise me on whether or not to do this?

Would I run into a major mess in the migration process or would it be simple and problem free?

SHould I stay with OE and just download some PIM freeware (if yes, WHICH freeware PIM product?)?

I have done a little research and it appears that Outlook does have some advantages with better interfaces for the email facility -- does everyone agree with that, and is it worth it for home use ???

    Hi keywester
It sounds like Outlook is indeed what you are looking for. No harm in trying it out. You can always go back to Outlook Express if you don't like it.
    Here's how Billy explains it.

Thanks for the "encouraging word" Daizy, it was just enough to prod me into going for it, even tho I have become skeptical of making any significant changes due to past problems... So, guess I should note the results, for anyone else contemplating the same migration, that might happen onto this and wonder what transpired....

Very smooth transition. Outlook 2000 has a "wizard" that asks a few questions and does all the work for you. Basically, I now have both OE and Outlook, and can use either as the default email handler by setting the default -- which I did (for now) set back to OE, as all I was looking for initially in Outlook was the PIM stuff and I can use that without it being the default email tool. Also affecting that decision, I have five email accounts established in OE and only the primary email account was converted/imported/established in Outlook, so rather than set up the four other accounts, I am leaving it like it is for the moment (altho, Outlook 2k from the standpoint of the email component looks to have more functionality than OE, so some rainy day I will likely complete the transition to Outlook for all my accounts and scrub OE). But for now, no problems, it all worked fine... Thanks again...

I spoke too soon, as tho the conversion went very well, exporting everything including emails to Outlook, I did not realize that there was a problem with Outlook...

Long story short, when I attempted to send/receive email in Outlook, I encountered the error "unable to connect to server ", so I put it on the back burner for a while, but eventually contacted level 1 support for my ISP. Now, I have been in and out of setting up OE accounts for a few years, so I am familiar with the settings, and Outlook is not all that different from OE, and the settings are comparable, and I am unable to find any obvious significant differences in the way Outlook is configured. Level 1 of course, was no help, coming up with some off the wall speculations such as maybe the install disk was corrupt, but I have a pretty good grasp on this stuff by now and feel fairly certain that there is some elusive little tweak somewhere that is evading me (and level 1...), which leads me to the point of my re-posting...

Given this short story, is anyone aware of some clandestine setting that has to be adjusted to complete the transition to Outlook...?
