I have a problem on a friend's wife's PC - Outlook Express 6.0 + SP1 will happily receive email, but will not send - get the usual Error Message re Servers, etc.

Have re-created the account - this has worked on other PC's with the same problem - and deleted the original. No joy

Have turned off NAV 2002 - set to check email both ways and Zone Alarm. No joy.

Imported husband's account (same ISP) onto wife's PC and deleted her account. Same problem.

Imported wife's account to husband's PC, deleted his account WORKS FINE!!

So it is not a problem with the account details - more likely software.

Wife's PC is XP Home + SP1 (preinstalled) - husband's PC is XP Pro + SP1 which I installed for him a few months ago.

    Any ideas

    TIA

    Hi PeteC

Have you tried doing a repair to Outlook Express...or uninstalling completely and re-installing perhaps?

    Hi Daizy,

No - I haven't got round to that yet, but it's a good suggestion.

IE 6 (+ OE6) doesn't appear in the Add/Remove Programs - it used to when we were with IE 5 and Win 98 and there was a repair facility, but not in XP it would seem.

Seem to recall I have a copy of a MS KB article on doing just that in XP somewhere - must check out the files!

    Thanks

Thanks, Daizy - some interesting stuff there!

I'll not be seeing this guy for a few days - I'll post back when I've had a chance to work on the PC again.

    Hi Daizy,

If I can trouble you once more - any idea how/where I can download IE 6 to my HDD to burn to CD. I'd like to minimise my friend's phone bill as I have lump sum 24/7 access.

The link to MS only downloads the setup.exe which installs from their server.

I may have it on a cover CD somwhere, but chances are it is only an upgrade from 5.5.

    Thanks

    Daisy,
Just a comment. But I believe I read on this board that XP won't allow a custom install of IE to install later.

    Hi Daizy,

Thanks for the thread - worked like a dream! Now have IE6 SP1 on CD.

Will let you know how I get on with it in due course.

    Aleecat

According to the download I can instal IE 6 at any time I choose - what you cannot do, as I understand, is literally a custom instal, selecting those components that you want and not others.

With previous flavours of Win and IE which had the Repair Facility in Add/Remove Programs I recall that you could add/remove components which were not core and repair IE or OE at will.

    Thanks guys :)

    Hi Daizy

As promised an update - TOTAL FAILURE :(

Uninstalled Zone Alarm, disabled email checking in NAV 2002, checked that XP firewall disabled - no joy

Ran System Filechecker (sfc /scannow) - no problems found (or at least no comeback from the checker) - no joy

Reloaded OE 6 from CD as per MS KB 318378 - no joy

Reloaded IE 6 and OE 6 from CD as per MS KB 318378 - no joy

OE will receive, but will not send.

I am lost now - the only remaining possibility would seem to be a repair of Win XP, but as I have already re-installed the relevant components is there any point? One concern is that this is XP Home for which I have access to a Recovery disk only - whether or not this will effect a repair or not I don't know.

As I posted earlier there is nothing wrong with the Account details as it works OK on the other PC.

Any more ideas - Daizy - anyone!!!

    Thanks

Sorry you're still having problems Pete C
I ran across this which may be worth a gander...but I'll keep looking.

Thanks, Daizy - I don't think it applies - I don't see that message and NAV is 2002.

    Appreciate your interest!

Pete C? Have you tried booting from the CD to see if you're offered the option to repair?

    Thanks for the suggestion.

No, I didn't go that far today. I guess that will be a last resort, but having re-installed IE 6 + OE 6 I am doubtful as to the need.

It will be a few days before I try again, in the meantime the lady in question can receive email on her PC, but has to send on hubby's.
