    Hi all

Yes I did have some mayor crash and almost all the things are back except my Sound.
I am running windows 98SE and the sound is onboard the mobo wich is a
    IwillKK266-R.
I reinstalled the Audio drivers of the mobo installation disk without any results. I have all my Drivers backed up, but I do not know how to and where to reinstall them to. This is a copy of the drivers maybe someone can tell me how and where to put them and this might put me back in business.
    Asio8738.dll - c3d.dll - cmaudio.vxd -
    cmedia.dll - cmmpupci.drv - cmpi95.drv
    cmswmpu.vxd - cmsynth.drv - msjstick.drv - parsedls.exe - vjoyd.vxd

this is one out of two Folders relating to C Media the name Iwill gave its sound source.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe Windows is trying to load the wrong drivers. If you have reinstalled the drivers, then you should be able to do a search with Start>Find and see those files you mention. Windows has to associate those files with the hardware.
I would go to Device Manager and remove any devices relating to sound and also check Add/Remove Programs for any audio. Reboot and see if Windows detects the hardware (if not run the Add New Hardware wizard) using "Have disk... ". Direct the wizard to your installation disk, where the audio files are.

I hope this relates to your system, I haven't had a lot to do with onboard audio (although I've contested with drivers quite a lot:mad: )

    Matt

PS Are you sure the drivers you've loaded from the disk are the correct ones for you audio? I know my installation disk had several to choose from.

    Hi there mattman,
thank you very much for your help, happy to say that I am back in business.
I endet up deleting all the sound drivers from Device Manager and then as you had sugested I reloadet the drivers pointing windows to the backup files that I had in my Backup Partition and it worked. I never had to reload drivers from a backup so to begin with I did not know what I was doing but I soon worked it out looking for them in the browser.
Wonder if you can help me some more in bringing things back to normal. During the process of trying to load drivers and things after the crash I had to go into Command prompt only several times bootet from floppy safe mode in and out and now in normal start up all this stuff comes up before the windows desktop appears the most anoying one is it loads into the prompt and I have to click on Normal Mode to continue how can I override all this stuff??
Any help would be much appreciated.

H, well done on the audio drivers. If you are still getting the "Normal Mode" screen then it may be some other drivers as well. Next time select Safe Mode and have a look in Device Manager and see if there is any items that have yellow !'s or red X's. Work out what drivers you will need (hopefully the backup ones will do the trick again), then do the same removing as previous.
You don't say how you've backed up the drivers, if it is a program like Windriversbackup then have a check in the Help menu. It may be able to zap all your drivers back like they were pre-crash (I don't have it installed at the moment, but do have mine backed up and haven't had to use them yet).

    Matt Hi,

I had a quick look in the Device Manager and the only yellow ? is on " Other Devices" Games Joystick I don't have one connected.
I also had a look in MS Config and I am not sure, but I think it could be in there
    I have Selected " SELECTIVE STARTUP "
    ticks are on:
    Process Config.sys file
    Process Autoexec.bat file
    Process System.ini file and
Load Startup group items which is normal
I can't remember what It was set on before.
In regards to the backed up Drivers yes I do use a neat little program called:
Windrivers Backup from JerMar Software Corp. it is free.
    Thanks again Matt
and looking forward to hear more from you.

    Hi again H,

Just want to check that when you got that screen you selected SAFE mode (I didn't emphasize it very well).

The Game(port ) joystick is part of your audio drivers and Windows will want to load drivers for the port, even though you don't have a joystick attached. See how you go installing drivers for it.

    Matt

    Edit:
My Gameport joystick is under 'Sound, video and game controllers' in Device Manager, so your's under 'Other Devices' may mean they are not "part of your audio drivers ", so you may have to search around to find them.

To shut of the Start menu when your computer starts run msconfig and click on advanced from the general tab. Uncheck "Enable StartUp Menu ", OK and restart computer. :)

    Hey H,

    What if....

If you can get those drivers installed for the Game(port) joystick and STILL get the "mode" screen, then it may mean that the OS has suffered some type of damage. I would be hazy past this point since I haven't had to go much further (as in other startup problems). If the good people here at the forum can't see a solution then it may be time to consider a reinstall, since the crash has effected too much of the system.

You should BACK UP your data now anyway, especially with these warning signs.

Could try a reinstall over the top of your current windows, or if you're confident of your backup and want a new start, then format and install from scratch (don't forget those driver backups;) ).

When you reinstall Windows and have the system set up the way you want then a good idea is to take an image of it with say Ghost or DriveImage (or even Windows Backup, but it's a bit more hassle). You then have little problem to return to a fully functioning system when there is a major drama.

Anyway, enough of my raving. Let's hope the Gameport joystick drivers solve the problem.

    Matt

    Hi there,

just a quick update and question,
the good news is I have all my audio drivers back now including the Games Joystick no more yellow ? marks in Device Manager.
The bad news is my Start up has not changed, so I would like to confirm from
"boonski" on your sugestion as to disable the Startup in MS Config does this only refere to all the stuff on the black screen before Windows starts or does this enable your start-up Programs as well
like AV and so on we have running.
    thanks guys
