    Hi again bert o
I'm bumping this one up for you, in hopes that someone else has a better answer for you.
I'm not a big believer in these programs. They use resources to run...which, to me... defeats the purpose.
Is there something in particular you're trying to accomplish with your computer?

These things can be fun to fool around with. There are usually options for changing effects and the interface that make things a little more interesting when you get sick of the same look all the time.

But don't you think it would be a good idea to thoroughly familiarize yourself with the way Windows is by itself before you go changing things? After you know Windows completely, you will then know what you would like changed.

And Daizy made a good point about the performance tweaks, too. I tend to think that Microsoft might know more than a little about Windows and would do what they could to optimize things. Some of the performance tweaks may be useful under certain circumstances, but as she pointed out, it makes little sense to try to make a computer run better by running even more processes.

My advice is to get to know Windows intimately and read about these tweaks before you start changing things.

(The download is free for a trial, but the program costs money when the trial runs out.)

Well, Daizy, as a diehard tweaker myself, I know that most performance tweaks are a waste of time if not actually counterproductive.

One of my favorites is "memory defraggers ". As if the order of things in RAM made the slightest difference---it is not spatially organized as it is on the disk. And the "R" in "RAM" is "random" access. The whole concept is ridiculous.

Along with that is usually a "memory optimizer ". These work by making extravagant requests for memory and dumping things to disk. "Freeing" memory has the net result that less is in use. Why not just pop out a stick? Windows has a page file for when the RAM runs low.

And on and on. The sellers are convincing sometimes, but these things usually kick in when the OS is under load, increasing the very load they purport to relieve. Waste of money. Free is too expensive. Real memory is comparably priced to the pay versions.

Only GUI tweaks can be both useful and mostly harmless.

Thanks for bearing with my climb onto the soapbox. I seem to be doing that more lately.

Oh, well. The doors aren't locked if the audience wants to leave ;) .
