    I had 98 in one HD and I installed XP in another. Later I tried to uninstall XP, couldn't, so I formated that HD.

    How can I remove the boot menu, so that it loads 98 automatically?
    I thought of setting timeout=0 in boot.ini, but that would take me to XP, which I don't have.

    Thks!

    Set boot.ini with 98 as the default OS and the time to zero and all you will see is an "automatic" 98 boot.

    You could probably get rid of all the NT bootloader stuff but I'm honestly not sure how to tell you to do that safely.

    thanks for your reply.
    I get the idea, but how do I set 98 as the default OS?

    Here is my boot.ini file:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional
    C:\= "Microsoft Windows "

    Thanks again

    This is my current Boot.ini, I have 98 on the 1st partition 'C' and XP on the second partition 'D'

    98 is my default OS

    [boot loader]
    timeout=5
    default=C:\
    [operating systems]
    C:\= "Microsoft Windows"
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

    if you change the timeout to '0' it should work.

    Hope this helps

    If you no longer have XP, and only want to boot to 98, then restart the computer with a 98 startup disk, and at the a:\prompt, type: sys c: {enter}
    Then change to C:
    At the C:\ prompt, type: fdisk /mbr {enter}
    You can now delete the following:
    boot.ini
    bootsect.dos
    ntdetect.com
    ntldr
    ntuser.dat
    any .log files, all from the root of C

    Thanks for that reboot. I knew there was a way but just didn't know exactly what it was.

    Reading your instructions got the old brain working some and now it all comes back. :)
    But from disuse, it will probably be gone again by next week. :eek:

    Roberto - you can go on like you are with the NT loader stuff in there and boot.ini set to start 98 for you or you can do as reboot wrote. It will save a little room at least and may prevent some problem down the road.
