I have builit me a new computer using an IWILL KA266R motherboard and windows98se operating system. I connect to the internet using broadband high speed. The adapter I have been using is an Realtek 8139 and has worked OK after I built the system. I do not leave the ethernet 10/100 plugged in to the router as this computer is for my grandkids and I do not want them with internet skills just yet. I use the internet on this computer to upgrade programs, drivers etc. and then I disconnect it. PROBLEM.... is when I now reconnect this device, windows does not recognize it. I can see it there while in the safemode, but not in regular mode. I've tried re-installing it, moving it to another pci slot and all other tricks that I know. Can't get it installed or recognized. This computer is only about 3-4 weeks old and all components were brand new out of the box. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks

Have you released and renewed the IP after reconnection?
Does device mangler show any yellow ! marks?
You could boot to safe mode, remove all networking components, TCP/IP the logon and such, then restart and reinstall the network card, and protocalls.

For the kids, why don't you set up a different accout for them to log into, and disable any hardware (the NIC) that you don't want them to have in that profile, so they can't get on the net?

Thanks for the rapid reply..... When you say release the internet stuff, you are saying removed, right? No I haven't.... I have removed the network hardware in the windows regular mode. I have not in the safe mode. I have removed the card, re-installed it in a different pc slot... restarted windows and "NO NEW HARDWARE IS FOUND ".

As far as the grandkids ability to access the internet, that's fine but it is a matter of running the cable from one room to the next. Cabeling thru the wall would be a problem... But that is a thought..

If windows doesn't find the hardware on boot up, have you run the add hardware wizard?
I would boot to safe mode, remove all networking stuff from device mangler, then remove all networking stuff from networking, including TCP/IP, the logon, and any sharing stuff.
    Restart, and reinstall from scratch.
There is the possiblity that the NIC is toast. Can you possibly try a different NIC?
I know that Windows has trouble if it's used to a network connection, then if it's removed, renewing it can be a hassle.
The easiest way to keep the kids off the net is to simply release the IP.
In 98, go to STart > Run > and type in: winipcfg
Hit the "Release All" button and let the kids do what they will.
When you want back on the net, just go back in to winipcfg and hit the "Renew All" button.
If the machine is started without the network connection present, it will release the IP, and will not automatically get one back until you go into winipcfg and renew it, after hooking the cable back up.

Just a question which may or may not be relavant.

Do you have either an Internal or Built in Modem ?

I have had a couple of machines lately that I had to pull a PCI Modem Out in order to get eother a Sound card or a NIC to work. Both using Win98SE.

If builtin it may need to be disabled.

I have unplugged the cable from the Router several times with no problems.

Thanks.... I will try the suggestions above... If I can find a neat way to route the cable to the kid's machine I will leave it plugged in to the router.....

There is no built-in modem or ethernet connection on my Mobo. Only built-ins I have on this board is audio and usb support.

This ethernet card could be toast, but I don't think so. I will take it to a shop and have it tested tomorrow.....

Funny thing is I used this ethernet card just after I put this system together and it worked fine. I unplugged the cable from the router to it and that's the way its been for about 10 days.. The computer has worked very fine and still works good. There are no yellow markers anywhere in system hardware. Perhaps the board fried somehow...... or the Mobo deceided it didn't like it anymore..... Anyhow thanks and more later.

In windows safe-mode the adapter is shown installed but!!! says it is not working right or it is not enabled....???
