    Hi Oscar,

    With Netscape closed:

Browse to your Mail\Mail Account Folder
Delete all files ending in MSF. Do not delete any files without the msf extension.

Let us know if you continue to have problems.

 Thank you Ramona for your quick response but I must be doing something wrong as I am unable to come up with the mail account folder. I have
browsed, ran search and used run and no such folder has made itself known.

Would you enlighten me further on where it maybe hiding? I haven't had this much problem with a window program and 4.79 looks better each day. :(

    Oscar
Take note, I at least spelled your name correctly.

    Hi Oscar,

Your Mail Folder is located here:
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt\Mail\accountname

If you are running Windows XP:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt\Mail\accountname
NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders

    Correct spelling duly noted! ;)

Let us know if you continue to have problems.

    Hi Ramona,

I'm getting to be a pest but I don't how
I'll ever get it running without your help.
I deleted all files ending with MSF but it didn't correct the problem. I was sure it would as they were all dups.

I thought it may be like Windows and some of the other programs. You reinstall and it'd work but I uninstalled and reinstalled it for the fourth time last night and I'd swear I got the same one back on the download. It has my address and the
other information I had entered which puzzles me to no end.

It worked until I disconnected from Webmail. Oscar

    Ramona,
I think the problem is there was to many dup. files in mail. What do you think?
    Earthlink.net -- 5 empty files, popstate
    & rules dat files.
    Local Folder--5 dup. files
Local Folder #1--10 files are dups. of the ones in the two folders above. IE inbox, draft, sent, templates, trash & read.
    Pop.earthlink.net-- Popstate & rules dat
plus the sames 10 files as in Local Folder
file, ie. inbox, sent, draft, trash etc.
    Pop..earthlink.net #1--popstate & rules dat plus 5 dup files,ie draft, sent etc.
Pop.earthlink.net #2-- 5 dup files ie trash sent, drafts etc.
Anyway, I deleted all but two folders, Local Folders and pop.earthlink.net and it works. But now I can't get the Local folders list back to the left of the screen. I maybe deleted one to many files. Like in the inbox file on pop.eartlink.net ? What do you think?

I owe you another thank you & in addition I wanted to tell you the check is in the mail as of tomorrow. Thanks again & maybe you can fix the latest problem as well. Oscar. :D

    Ramona,

Hopefully I won't be bothering you for awhile as I think I have it back on line. I can send but I'm not certain I can recieve but I am assuming I can . You'll probably be hearing from me again if I can't.

Some of the MSF files won't stay deleted I have deleted some as many as 3 times and they keep coming back. But as long as it's working I won't complain.

One reason, I think, for that is I still have a copy of Netscape 4.79 which is my default broswer. With the problems I have been having with 7.0 I can't get the wife to change , which is fine, she uses one and I use the other. The only problem they are both on the same computer. I know your site isn't mean for this dribble. I'll hold it down in the future.

    Thanks again, Ramona you've been a big help. :D :D :D Oscar

    Hi Oscar,

It looks to me as if you have been doing all the work! No problem is considered dribble, and you are not being a pest! :)

Netscape rebuilds the MSF files on restart. The reason they are deleted, is that the files become corrupt. Once deleted, and Netscape restarted, then a new clean file is built.

Reinstalling Netscape is rarely a solution for most problems. The solution usually lies within the Profile itself, including Mail.

Are you by chance using the same Profile for both 4.79 and 7.02? These two browsers are very compatible, but shouldn't share a Profile.

I don't know what a profile is exactly but if you're asking whether I have files for both browsers in the mail file I think so. I have deleted all of the msf files but I can not get compose to work. So you'll have to tell me how to insert them in a seperate profile as I don't have a clue.

I know there is just one netscape showing in the Program files so maybe that's a clue. You know I'm enjoying this education I'm getting . Maybe I should have made the check out for more then $19.95??? I know I should have listed myself as a beginner. But if you don't desert me we'll make this thing work.

Right now I don't know if I'm a foot or horseback. I have not messed with Netscape at all except to set it up and as you know you just fill in the blanks. I never knew there was all this other stuff . I guess that "other stuff" is whats throwing me. So I'll shut down and wait for your new instructions. Thanks ever so much for helping me. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. :D

Never fear, Oscar, I will not desert you! I may weep, moan, and gnash, my teeth, but I'll stick with you to the bitter end... ;)

The Profile is the directory which holds all your preferences, i.e., the settings you selected when you installed Netscape. These are found in: Edit | Preferences That would include your Mail & Newsgroups settings also.

In Windows Explorer the Profile directories are located in different places, depending on the Version of Netscape.

Netscape Communicator 4.7x Users Folder (same as Profile):
    Located in:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\yourusername

    Netscape 7.0x Profiles Folder:
    Located in:
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\yourusername\xxxxxxxx.slt
    (depending on your OS)

What I'm asking is if the 4.7x username is the same as the 7.0x username?

In your Program Files when you expand the Netscape Folder, you should see the following Folders:
    Communicator
    Netscape
    Users

Communicator and Users Folders are obviously Communicator 4.7x

    The Netscape Folder is 7.0x

Soak this in and then take a look at this page: Create a New Profile
Don't do anything yet, but just read it over and try to absorb a little of the content, and look at the files it describes.

Lemmeno about your Profile Names, whether or not they are the same.

    Hi Ramona,

Maybe it'll be easier on you then we thought. On netscape the username is Oscar, just like the Winnie on tv...
    rolleyes:

On Netscape 7.0 it is ocompton, which as yet has not made it on the tv.

So what I have in 7.0 mail is this: earthlink.net, Local Folders, Local Folders 1, pop.earthlink.3 net & pop.earthlink.net.

It seems to me I have them all messed up & I don't know wich is the correct ones or what files they should have in them for sure.

So if we, notice how I slipped that we in, could correct that I think we'd be in business. Which can't be to soon for me and I suppose you feel the same. But it sure has kept me off the streets the past four days.

I know at least one of the local folders is required and one of the earthlinks .net but which one and what files are required, other then the Local Folders list. I do not know . Forgot to tell you that the Documents & Settings on my computer is where 7.0 is and the 4.7 is where you said it was.

    In the pop.earthlink.net is a "sub-file "
called Inbox.sbd. I deleted the MSF file but didn't check the name so that may be one of the problems.

I have my Local Folders list in place except News is directly below Local Folders and I like to have it at the bottom of the list where it is hidden but haven't figured a way to do it.

Can't think of anything further that may be of help and I hope I have written this to where it's half way clear.

I have a very good dentist if you have any problem with your teeth during this operation.

    Hi Broni,

I'm not sure this is the correct way to reply to you but what the hey!!! We have to start somewhere.

I don't know what I would of done without Ramona's instructions. She makes them so clear that if a person can read English they are easy to follow. I don't feel like the Lone Ranger now that she has appeared on the scene.

One thing for sure I'll know a great deal more about Netscape when this is over then I ever thought I would.

Thank you for your imput. I appreciate it but I never for once thought she'd desert me. Not that I'd blame her.

    Oscar,

This may seem repetitive, but I need to be clear on what you've done. We need to determine which of the Mail files actually contain your Mail. Once that is determined, then I believe you will need to create a new Profile, then copy the pertinent files to that Profile.

I think you went wrong when you deleted Local Folders. It is advised that these folders shouldn't be deleted, but if so, it is done through the prefs.js file. Even though you had a duplicate Local Folders, I think you deleted the default, as it no longer appears in your Folders Left Pane. A new Profile will create a "good" Local Folder.

    With Netscape closed:
    Open Notepad
Browse to each Mail file, without the msf extension, and tell me if you see Mail.

This is what I understand your Mail Folder contains:

    earthlink.net
    Local Folders
    Local Folders-1
    pop.earthlink.3.net
    pop.earthlink.net

I also need to know if you have more than one Mail Account?

Lemmeno, and we'll go from here. There's no rush, so just take your time...

    Ramona :D

    Oscar,

In your Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings
To what Mail Folder does the Target Line for "Local directory" point?

    Thanks,

:D :D :D All the way to the bank, Ramona. Could be a title to a song.

You can put those tissies away & quit gnashing your teeth. We got this sucker up and running like it knew what it was doing. I ran a new profile on it and the only reason I didn't do it before is because I forgot about it although I did it a few years ago. My memory isn't what it use to was. Hell, pardon my french, to get old. They say that's the first thing to go. The trouble is I don't remember if it was or not.

Your last posting stumped me as I couldn't find a thing like that or anyway to get it. I followed the chain of command and never came close to figuring it out.

Do you think I dare get more then one mail account. I could really fix myself up then. I just have the one but I'm thinking about getting a second one.

I checked the mail files on the new profile and copied them down in the event this should happen to me again.
It all started when I disconnected from Webmail or what ever they call it. This time I'll keep it connected. I tried not to install it but it didn't pay the least bit attention and installed anyway. Learn to live with it I guess.Iit's not a big deal compared to what is going on in the world.

There are two folders in the Mail folder, I guess that's what it is.

Local Folders: contains, drafts, templates, unsent messages, sent and
    trash.

pop.earthlink.net Contains, drafts, inbox, sent msf file, a vanilla sent file, trash msf file, and a vanilla trash file, inbox msf file, popstate & rules
    file.

I was close , had I deleted the popstate and rule files it would have worked. But that's allright. I learned something while messing around with it and I feel like you're an old friend.

Thanks so much for all your help.

I'll know better then to do that again. It cost you and me a lot of time but I would have been mowing my lawn in between rain showers and working on my taxes and I don't enjoy either one all that much.

So until next time take care and hang in there. :D :D

Good going Oscar! That's exactly what my plan was, once you had located the Folders where your Mail was hiding.

A new Profile is usually your best bet, if deleting the MSF Files doesn't work. I'm not so sure that deleting popstate.dat and rules.dat would have helped you. Rules.dat are your Mail filters, and the popstate.dat file keeps track of messages "left on server ". I don't believe that would have done anything for your extra Folders, or your missing Default Local Folders.

By Webmail, do you mean when you Registered Netscape, you gave a Screen Name and Password, etc.? Then when you logged off, that's when you lost your POP3 Mail? If you don't want to use Webmail, the account will be defunct if not used over a 12 month period.

The Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings can be found by clicking on:
Edit | Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings | Server Settings..... That's where the Local directory target line is located. This Screen Shot shows the setting you were unable to find.

Another Mail Account would be a no sweat issue, now that you have a new Profile. To create your second account, click on the "Add Account" Tab (shown in above Screen Shot). The Mail Account Wizard will take you through it step by step. Have your Earthlink Mail settings handy before you begin.

Now that you have a working, error free Profile, back up the Profiles Folder frequently. Create a Backup Folder on your HD, and copy the Profiles Folder to this location. If you are a heavy user, then do it frequently. If not, then only when you have made changes within the Program.

    Good Morning Ramona,

If you think you'll require the services of a dentist let me know and I give you the name of mine. He is good.

My Server Settings in the field are identical to the one you sent me but the
column does not have a screen shot nor could I find anything to indicate I could pull up one. No big deal just scrap of information is all.

That mail file gave us quite a run. I apologize that I was unable to give you more assistance. I was in virgin territory
which was quite obvious to you I'm certain. But alls well that ends well.

Thank you for your patience, I can't tell you enough times how much I appreciated your help.

    Oscar :)
