    Hi, I am using Win98se and IE6.

How do I get the quick launch bar space to shrink? When I add an icon, I can increase it and it will stay put. But, when I delete one or more icons, I can shrink the size, but it will go back to larger when I reboot, leaving blank spaces. Any help appreciated.

Also, When I rearrange the Icons, they will go back to the previous positions when I reboot. Any suggestions to make them stay where I want them?

dan239--I understand you are talking about shrinking the bar horizontally (side to side), not vertically.
On the same bar as Quick Launch (the Taskbar) you should have two "sliders ", one on each side of the Quick Launch area. (Sliders are little vertical lines that appear slightly 3-D.) If you position your cursor over the slider on the right, it should turn into a double-headed arrow. You can now drag the slider to the left and reduce the Quick Launch area to nothing but two carets (>>). (If you click on the carets you will get a drop-up menu of everything in Quick Launch.) Or you can drag it so that only the most important Quick Launch items appear. The rest will be accessible from the >> menu.
I can rearrange any of the icons in Quick Launch by dragging them around. They stay where I put them when I reboot. If that is not happening for you, perhaps someone else can help. Maybe just uninstalling/reinstalling Quick Launch (right click on an empty part of the Taskbar|click Toolbars|click Quick Launch) will do it??

    Thanks WelshJim

I am talking about changing the size horizontially.

I can do all you are saying, but it will go back where it was when I reboot. It leaves me with blank spaces to the right if I have deleted some icons. I can slide the slider over to where I want it, but it is changed when I reboot.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the quick launch and it comes back on the right side. Then I reposition it to the left like I want it and rearrange the icons in the order I prefer. When I reboot, some of the icons are in a different position and I must drag them to where I want them. The quick launch will stay on the left and it will have a blank space where I previously had an icon. The blank space is always on the right of the icons.I can move the slider to the left and get rid of the blank space. At the next boot it will be back where it was and I must repeat the moving of icons and the slider.

This is a matter that my changes are not staying put.

    Daniel,

Right click on the taskbar and select properties. Uncheck "Group similar taskbar buttons" and select "lock the taskbar "after you get everything where you want it.

When the taskbar is locked, you cant see the raised vertical bar for resizing.

    Does that do the trick?

I do not find "Group similar taskbar buttons" and "Lock the taskbar ".

I only have "Always on Top ", "Auto hide ", "Show small icons in Start Menu" and "Show Clock ".

These are the only four options I have when I right click the taskbar and select "Properties" / "Taskbar Options ".

Am I looking in the wrong place?

Not sure if this would help as I have win me

"How do I get the quick launch bar space to shrink "

unlock toolbar if locked , on win me its start , settings taskbar& start menu, advanced , [ ] unable moveing and resizing,
On 98 I though it was on R/click context menu done from on taskbar..

could also r/click choose folder may need to have pointer near quick launch, in qlaunch folder sort by name type etc etc
view arrange icons anyway this may need to be done for it to stick.Or drill down to this quicklaunch folder
    C; //windows/application data//microsoft/internet explorer/quick launch...

r/click on taskbar remove quicklaunch then replace and resize

I have two toolbars--well one with two colums ,I arrange qlaunch
on top near start button and programs appear on bottom
    starting from right side..
    reboot did it stick ?
well this will bump this post up if not ,, maybe a 98 user will see.

    Bye for now

    Thanks, Lonny

I think I have tried everything that you suggested, but I will do a little more experimenting to be sure.

Win 98se does not have the "enable moveing and resizing ", it is supposed to be enabled all the time. I have not found a taskbar lock.

If some of this works, I will post back.

If you have Tweak UI installed, on the explorer tab, make sure the line that says save explorer windows settings is checked. If you don't have it you can get it here .

I do have Tweakui. I have the "save changes" checked. I have tried it both checked and unchecked with no effect on this problem.

I have tried uninstalling Tweakui and it made no difference. When I restart my computer it is back where it was the same as last time I restarted, no matter what changes I have made. Based on my past experience, if I added another icon and lengthened the bar, it would stay put.

I can add or delete icons with no problem. It is just the order of the icons that will not stay put, as well as the length.

I should also point out that if I uncheck the Quick Launch, it will disappear. When I recheck it, it will appear on the right side. If I leave it there and restart, it will be back on the left side and 8 positions long.

    Thanks for trying

How many shortcuts do you have in there ?

do you position quick-launch on one column of task-bar ?
If it appears on two this is why it gets rearranged,

" "It is just the order of the icons that will not stay put" "
this may happen when to many are in there.
I you get to the quick launch folder , as mentioned before, there is sort of a walk around,, place each in the order you want
and rename such as 001 002 003 and windows will should remember.

    Regards
    Lonny

I have one bar with 8 icons. If I delete or move some of them to the Desktop, the bar will be 8 positions long the next time I restart. It makes no difference what length I had it set when I restarted. If I have less than 8 icons, it will have blank spaces to fill it out to 8 positions.

I can rearrange the folder and it has no effect on the order that they appear in the quick launch toolbar.

When I Right Click the Taskbar/ Toolbars/Quick Launch and uncheck the quick launch, the toolbar disappears. Then I check the quick launch, the toolbar appears on the right side and in the order they are in the folder. But when I restart, they are back on the left side, in a different order and always 8 positions long.

Hope I have made myself clear as to what is happening.

I have an idea as to what may have caused this. You stated that WinME has the option to "enable moving and resizing ". Some time ago I upgraded to WinME and had to take it out because I did not have the software available for some of my hardware to run in WinME. This may have been when this problem started.

It could have locked the Quick Launch Toolbar and when I went back to Win98se, it stayed locked. Now I have no way of unlocking it, unless someone can tell me where that change occurs when you check or uncheck it in WinME.

I may decide to install WinMe again and check the "enable moving and resizing ", save the change, and then uninstall WinME and see if it will stay that way. It would be lot of trouble, but it may be worth it to fix this problem.

    One question

Is WinME's default position that the Quick Launch Toolbar is locked?

    Hi dan239

No I dont think it is default

In windowsme its called "enable moving and resizing "
I think in win 98and 98se its called lock the toolbar, its not a lock for the qlaunch part persay but for whole thing.
it was just suggestion to unlock or enable moveing and rezising
then to change position and placement of qbar. then lock
    then restart.

I added a line(edited) to last question, maybe you didnt see it.

As far as I know there is no "lock the taskbar" in Win98se.

My quick launch bar is in one column only. The taskbar is 2 columns.

follow instructs on that link, even though it says ie4 its the same, once you find that folder , drag each icon where you want, in the order you want name the first 001, 002 ,003, etc.
or view arange icons,, in other words if you have ever had lots in there windows get a little confused and attempts to arrange them every time pc is started ,

Try that and uncheck quicklaunch , recheck, position quick launch where you want, restart pc.

If that dont work Im all out off ideas sorry

    Thanks, Lonny

That did get the icons in the order that I wanted them.

However, I still cannot get it to stay shortened down to 4 icons with the >> at the right end. I can set it that way but it goes back to 8 positions when I restart.

At least they are in the right order and I can live with the longer bar, if I have to.

    Thanks again
