Send To menu

Carval here:

Is there a way to add 'Programs' from my 'Start' menu to the
'Send To' menu? Or, say I have something on my desk I want to send to 'Programs'. I have tried dragging it to the Start and then dragging it up to the 'Programs'... that doesn't work.

I would also like to create a personal file in the 'Send To' menu.

I've read a tip at Wugnet Tips on how to do this, but it did not work.
Can anyone give me a step by step method on how to accomplish this?

Can you give us a specific example of what you want to do ?

Normally, you cannot use the "Send To" right click option in Windows Explorer to open a file with a program.
It is usually easier just to double click the file. This will open it with the associated program in the registry entry for the file type.

Add Programs to the Send to menu

Sorry, upon re-reading my first post, I can see it is not very clear.

I'm trying to add Programs to the Send to menu.

I have a WinZip program on my desk. (I can't remember how/why I put it there) I am now trying to clear it off my desk.

I am not able to drag it into Programs by dragging it to the Start menu and then dragging it into Programs.

I tried right clicking it and sending it to My Documents, but I get a message "This change could impact one or more registered programs. Do you want to continure? "

Now I'm thinking, even if I had Programs as an option on the Send to menu, I will probably get the same caution message.

I hope this is more clear.. If so, can you help?

How to Modify the Send To Menu
By default, the Send To menu contains floppy disk drives, mail and fax recipients, and your Briefcase. To add a destination to the Send To menu, add a shortcut to the Windows\SendTo folder. To do so, follow these steps:

Click the Start button, and then click Run.
Type "sendto" (without quotation marks) in the Open box, and then click OK.
Add a shortcut using either of the following methods:
Dragging a new shortcut to the folder:

Use the right mouse button to drag a destination to the SendTo folder, and then click Create Shortcut Here on the menu that appears.

I highly recommend getting the "Sendto X" powertoy as instructed within the link. I use the option of "any folder "_copy or move everyday and don't know what I'd do without it.

Additional nfo.......
Once you've finished the installation, your Send To menu will have several new options in addition to 'Any Folder'. This includes a drop down to browse to any folder you want and keeps a history list for those you use often.
Some unwanted or unneeded options will also be added. If you don't want all of the new options, select Start, Settings, Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon, and on the Install/Uninstall tab, double-click Send To Extensions Power Toy. Uncheck the options you don't want and click OK.

Some users have had problems when using this older tweak. They discovered the default right click options of SendTo Desktop as Shortcut, and SendTo Recipient no longer worked but there's fix's for this if you are effected. I,myself have never suffered from this bug but....

This is a regpatch that once opened and extract to folder of choice you will have a *.reg file that when double clicked on will correct the registry keys and fix the problem.

Remember, the secret to the sendto folder is: you only want to put shortcuts into this folder. Do not try to drag and drop actual files or folders into it.

As for the special folder you want to add, you must first create your folder [name of choice] open up your "Sendto" folder and drop a shortcut to the folder you just made. If your unclear on steps needed to do this, again, just give a shout.

I'm not sure what your trying to accomplish here. You can add shortcuts to the executables that start your programs, but the only thing you'd be able to send to these shortcuts are files with the extensions that the programs are designed to work with.

For example:
You can add a shortcut for "notepad.exe" to the sendto folder and any file that you wish to open in notepad can now be right clicked upon and "send to ">notepad will be available as an option.

and then Click the Properties menu item.

Trogladite SendTo

Carval,

Try this.

I have been using Trogladite's SendTo for over a year and it has never failed me. Saved a ton of time and aggravation, too.

I would suggest using the "Copy files" option over the "Move files" option until you get the hang of using the program, though.
