I did a search. All I found was how to change the default location of the My Documents for XP.

I have removed the My Documents off of my Start Menu. Now I want to move the folder itself.

I don't want to just make a copy of the My Documents folder. I want to physically move the existing one to a logical partition, but still be able to access it from the desktop shortcut.

Does anyone know how to do this in Win 98SE?

Deloris: Somebody may have to come along and fine-tune this, but I think what you want to do is to open Windows Exlorer in Tile format so that the present location of the folder is in one window and the destination partition is in the other window. Then highlight the source folder and click on either Copy to ... or Move to ...

Now double-click anywhere in the destination partition window and paste the folder in the new partition. Once it's there, you create a desktop icon for it. Now the folder is in the destination partition and you have a desktop icon for it as you wanted.

If you had to copy (rather than move) the folder, you can now delete the source version of the folder if you want.

These directions assume you already know how to do such things as open windows in Tile format, and right-click to get certain menus to open to copy or move or paste. If any of it is unclear, get back to us for clarification. In any case, let us know how the procedure works for you.

    Deloris,

right-click on the "My Documents" icon on the desktop, choose properties and move folder. Specify the desired location.
I´m not 100% sure but I think that You´ll be asked if You´d like to move all existing documents with it and that´s what You want.

If You cut and paste or drag and drop the folder in Explorer, Windows will recreate a new one in the default location on the next reboot (I think) and keep locating Your documents where You don´t want them.

    HTH,
    Christer

OK guys. I will try the easier one first. :D

I wasn't sure if you could just delete the folder or not, without causing a problem, since it is a default folder of the OS. I figured it would probably make another one if you did, but wasn't sure.

In the past, I've gotten into heaps of trouble deleting things that I wasn't sure of. :D You know the kind when you get the black screen that means you are dead in the water? And no matter how many times you punch that power button, it won't even attempt to boot. :D That was when I was a newbie though. I've done a little better since then. :)

Thanks for the different ways. If one don't work, maybe the other one will. Will let you know.

    Hello again,

The easy one worked like a charm. :) Deleted the old folder, & it didn't make a new one on C when I re-booted. That's one Desktop right click I hadn't explored. :D

I wanted to do this because, I have 3 OS's on my master drive, & wanted to make the My Documents folders for each one accessible to all of them. Wanted to completely free up that space, & not have an empty folder sitting there on C. I even re-named it to "My Documents Internet" when I relocated it. Doing that, I can put all 3 of them on the same partition.

    Another happy customer. :)

    Thanks again guys.
