    Hello

Not sure if this is right forum to post but am getting desperate for some help.

When I dial up I get connected then after a few moments lose connection. I have tried everything...have contacted BT and line is good. Have contacted my server provider and they say all is okay. Modem seems to be okay but I keep getting disconnected after a few moments. Can anyone help please. I have windows XP. A message I got after disconnected was no PPP link so dont know if this means anything.

    Regards

    Joan:(

    hi Odlink

Thank you for reply. Don't think its my phone line as am using a lap top at moment on same line. My modem is MSP38800-W so how can I get another modem for my pc? When I had pc it came loaded with ME but when I had a virus, someone reformatted and put on XP. Does this make a different when trying to get another modem? As you can tell, am computer illiterate, sorry

Do you have your email program running when you get disconnected?

If you're using Outlook Express, it has a setting in Tools>Options>Connection tab to "hang up after sending and receiving" and that might be checked. If so, uncheck it. Other email clients often have the same setting.

    Also check to see if your system is set to disconnect after xx minutes of inactivity. To do this;

    1. Right click on the Internet Explorer Icon on your desktop and select "Properties" from the pop-up menu.

    2. Click on the "Connections" tab and then on "Settings ".

    3. In the Settings window click on "Advanced" and remove the check-mark from "Disconnect if idle for xx minutes ".

    4. Click OK, OK and OK.

    hi all

Thank youfor replies. Have done all you suggest but still getting disconnected. When I first log on before 1st disocnnection speed is at 46.6 then next time it is at 26.6. Dont know if this has anything to do with it. Could it be my modem? Server says its not them, and phone line is okay so I dont know what else it could be.

    regards

    Joan

Without getting technical, PPP is simply a type of dial-up connection. The error that you mention in your first post is simply telling you that no connection is present.

You said "Phone line is OK" Have you had this checked by your local phone company? If not, they can run some checks on the line to see if its compatible with a computer hook-up. From your description it sounds as if your connection is being dropped.

Just because you can plug a phone into the line and talk doesn't mean that the line is good enough for the computer. Have a friend here in town who routinely was running at about 28 Kbps when others in town were connecting at a much higher speed. Had the phone company check it out and found out that the line was bad.

You don't have call waiting enabled on your phone line do you? If so that could cause a problem.
