    Hi guys,

Wonder if anyone has any ideas about a problem I'm having writing CD's.

Out of the blue a few days ago my CD writer started hanging when writing a CD. If I End Task/Process the app (Nero) disappears but the process remains and the CD drive is unusable. The light flickers red as though burning but I need to reboot to be able to open it again.

I've tried moving the drive to another machine and it worked fine so it's definatley something to do with my PC. Thinking it could be software related I tried WinOnCD and Roxio and they had the same problems.

The CD drive is set as secendary master and is hooked up to a 300W power supply. It's worth mentioning that even a simulation causes the same problems - which is very strange!

Been throwing ideas back and forth in the office but haven't managed to come up with any anwsers so over to you :)

Win 2000 Server, the drive has been installed about two years (unbrabded but never had a problem with it). No new software or hardware installations. It just...stopped

    Things to try

Are you trying to burn "on the fly "? As in from cdrom to burner? This burner an OEM? If not try & get a firmware upgrade from manufacture. Also prolly not "burnproof" which means any movement of mouse, keyboard, screesaver, acpi powermanager, taskschedular, etc will stall the burner for a split second=coaster.

Make sure nothing is running in the background, impossible, this is a server win2k rite? Something grabs the cpu when your burning your stalled. Solution! exit all activities before starting burn, specially those things in the "tray ". Also delete tmp files from C:\windows\temp folder. In win2k it's prolly c:\winnt\temp

    :)

Could the cable be defective? Maybe your hard drive needs cleaning.

    Hi guys,

Just wanted to post with an update. I finally decided to format and rebuilt the machine - it need it anyway after being bashed about for studying on.

After I rebuilt I loaded the latest Nero again and still had the same problems. In desperation I scoured the Net for different CD programs. I installed CDBurn and elected to use its own ASPI layer. Bobs your uncle it worked. Tried Nero and that works now too so I'm guessing it was a dodgy ASPI layer that was the culprit.

Interesting to note that the latest Nero gave the same problems after a fresh install but I'll know where to start looking if it happens again.

Thanks for the replies and the advice :)

If more people came back to let us know their result (good or bad), this would be a better place for all who drop in.

    Thanks!
