    HI
You should get the latest directX

    " "System Requirements
    Supported Operating Systems:
Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP" "

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/downloads/drx90.asp
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Select language on the right and go
Not sure if this will fix anything, most likely will

Do you use windows update regularly ?

If you don't want to go through all the updates yet,
(DirectX is not offered by windows update, far as I know)
You could update just dierctX and wmp.
    do directX first then open
Wmp while online, not within IE, go to start programs wmp.
open it up, go help (on its toolbar) check for player updates
what version do you have --help about windows media player. ?

" internal application error" what details ?
How much memory does PC have ?

I was getting the not responding thing to whenever I closed wmp
Not sure why. Till it and directX was updated.

Its best to when its playing something to first use stop button and then don't use the X button to exit , go file close instead.

I'm sure someone will disagree, But I don't let IE display media within itself, media bar,(I always had problems with it)
instead I have it setup to call Wmp , opens by itself outside IE,when required. (personal preference)

[Also--- and I may be wrong]--calling wmp from within IE using the media bar calls the basic version of wmp or Mplayer2.exe , rather then the full blown version which is wmplayer.exe

On IE's toolbar go tools Internet options , advanced , (media area)
[X] don't display online media content in media bar.

    So keep forum informed OK

    thanks for your help,,,,,
My computer is a Pent 3 550mhz emachine, 256 sdram, 8mb 3d nvidia 128bit tnt2 , with about 2gigs free space on a 15 gig hard drive. I sometimes have trouble with realone player running my computer out of memory, and it tells me to shut down some programs, even if there is nothing to shut down(alt/ctrl/del)in the close programs window.
I have the new direct x 9.0 and also the new divx 5.03 bundle. I have been able the use the mplayer and mplayer2 when right clicking and holding shift, using "open with" on a windows media file and watch it with either one of them. I also tried reinstalling WMP and it seems to have no effect or make any difference....I think I even tried the beta 9 version.

    HI

I maybe the wrong person to comment , I don't know win 98 well
and usually don't use any media players especially while on-line,
they eat to many recourses, sure I can listen but note surf very well.

If you r/click on Wmp's icon , properties and then find target
takes us to WMP folder wmplayer is the full version
    Mplayer2 is basic version
I think you see that but

" "I have been able the use the (wmplayer)mplayer and mplayer2 when right clicking and holding shift" "

what happens when you r/double click on a media file ?

what version of WMP do you have ? still beta maybe the cause.
did you try to update it as suggested, ?
    ------------
I was getting the not responding thing to whenever I closed wmp
Not sure why. Till it and directX was updated.
I forgot to say I also had beta version then.
    -------------------------
Are you familiar with the resource meter ?
Its usually in system tools, is it there ?
You could create another shortcut and put it in the startup folder
or just run it one windows session, once its in system tray r/click details or L/double brings it up , the top percentage is one to be concerned with.
what does it read when problems happen ?

    What version of realplayer ?

Have you tried the msconfig utility to eliminate unnecessary startups, ?
    -----------edit------------------
Another thing to do is run directX's test's >sound, after updating
wmp, start>run type dxdiag hit ok--use each tab run all tests
except network then save the info ,
    any problems with sound ?
Or have you done this already ?
dont let my basic instructions upset you --we dont know you're skill level till you reply several times
    Later
