    I want to install Win 98SE from my Hard Disk not the CD. Assuming I will store the Win 98SE setup files on a D drive (a partiton of one Hard Drive), how do I go about copying the setup files from the CD to the D drive so I can install windows from the D drive?

    Look for a folder called Win98 (or similar) on your Windows CD and just copy that across to your D drive.
    You may have to make a change to your Registry to point programs to the new location so you don't get the "insert Windows CD etc" message when you install programs which need to extract files from Windows Setup.

    The place to go to in the Registry is:
    HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup and look for a line called SourcePath Type and edit the line to reflect the new location you have just setup. eg D:\Win98\.

    Don't forget to backup your current Registry first.

    Note: the above procedure is only necessary if you want program installers to access the folder on your D: drive. If you were to format and install Windows clean from your D: drive it would be done automatically...

    Edit: on previous post: "SourcePath Type" should read "SourcePath "
    See below:

    Boot up the computer with a startup floppy choosing with CDRom support, watch for the message giving you the drive letter for the CD. Type in these commands at the A:> prompt, pressing enter after each line;

    d:
    md\win98
    copy X:\win98\*.* d:\win98 [X being the letter for the CD]

    This copy all the files from that folder into the other, *.* means any name will do, with any file extension.

    If you are installing onto a formatted C: drive, such it will not boot up without a startup floppy, do these commands to have a little as possible loaded into memory for an easier setup.

    sys a: c:

    This will make the hard drive bootable, enough to do the next command after booting it.

    d:\win98\setup.exe
