ZoneAlarm Free 3.7.143 can be downloaded here

    ==========Forwarded message=============

Zone Labs has heard your feedback!

With version 3.7.143, to be released in the next 24 hours, we're
changing the "Check for Update" functionality in ZoneAlarm back to the
way it worked in earlier releases. That means that we're returning
complete control over "Check for Update" to users. In version 3.7.143,
the "Check for Update" interface in ZoneAlarm will be re-enabled,
allowing users to choose whether or not to be notified when newer, more
secure versions of our products are available. We sincerely hope you
choose to be notified, and we strongly recommend that option to all our
    users.

As we've stated before, all security software needs regular updating.
    Hackers are constantly searching for new attacks and vulnerabilities;
if you are not informed about updates, your security will not be as
strong as it could be. You may become vulnerable to the latest threats.
What's worse, you won't even know it. One of the abiding principles at
Zone Labs is that a false sense of security is worse than no security
    at all.

We know that you have many choices in deciding how best to secure your
PC. When you choose Zone Labs software to protect you, you should know
that we take our security responsibility very seriously. We also
respect your privacy and your right to be in control of your own
security. We believe all of these principles are important, and we
wanted to take this opportunity to state them clearly to you.

By the way, it's worth stating that when you DO enable "Check for
Update ", Zone Labs does not and will not--EVER--save any information
specific to your PC. This is our solemn pledge to you, as a security
    company.

We'd like to thank everyone who participated in the online discussions
and voiced their opinions. It's a rare privilege and honor to work on
products that inspire such passion. Software development is a two-way
street--we continually strive to build the security products that YOU
want. We appreciate your help in making that a reality.

Thank you very much for your continued support and for placing your
    trust in Zone Labs software.

    Zone Labs

zaf 3.7.143 installed on winxp and win2000 no problems and running fine...

to upgrade from a previous version, remember to uncheck the box that says "load zonealarm at startup ", then reboot and close all apps before installing.

following these very basic guidelines has always produced great results for me with za.

btw, the default condition in preferences for checking for updates is "automatically ", and must be changed to "manually" if you do not wish za to conduct these checks on its own.

    good luck

    :)

looks like the new version changes are officially listed as:

    Maintenance bug fixes
Compatible with the upcoming 2003 server

i suspect that the area of change that has been of greatest concern to most folks (automatic checking for product updates) falls under the auspices of "Maintenance bug fixes ".

    :)
