    Hi all :)

As long as I have had my recently-inherited puter, everytime I go to
shutdown I have to manually click shutdown (period).

How can I change this so the radio button is always shutdown not
    restart?

Also please: can I tell my scandisk to NOT run at the first before I
even get to my start wallpaper menu?

I like running it while I'm not needing to do something right away.

Thx for the GREATTTTTT answers all :)
    You are THE BEST!

I don't know why you default to restart, probably a registry problem. What it should do is remain set at whatever was last used.

A way around that is to create your own desktop shortcuts to do what you like.

On the desktop, right-click and go to New - Shortcut . In the window which appears, enter the path:

    C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32 SHELL32.DLL,SHExitWindowsEx n

Where n is one of the following values, depending on the task you want to accomplish:

n=0 LOGOFF: Shuts down all running processes, logs the user off, then restarts the Windows shell. (Same as Logoff on the Start Menu.)

n=1 SHUTDOWN: Shuts down the system to a point at which it is safe to turn off the power. All file buffers have been flushed to disk, and all running processes have stopped.

n=2 REBOOT: Shuts down the system, then restarts it. (Same as Start Menu - Shutdown - Restart.)

n=4 FORCE: Forces all processes to terminate - in effect, shuts down all running programs. When this flag is set, Windows does not query running applications to inform them that Windows is shutting down. This can cause the applications to lose data, therefore, you should only use this flag in an emergency.

n=8 POWEROFF: Exits Windows, then turns off the computer's power (provided the computer supports the power-off feature).

n=-1 RESTART EXPLORER: Quickly closes Explorer (i.e., the Windows desktop), then lets it restore itself.

As for scandisk, does it run every time you boot up? If yes then there is a setting somewhere that needs to be changed. Look in the autoexec.bat to see if it's in there.

If it's only running after a bad shutdown then this is normal, it can be changed but I would advise against it, if you really want to change it go into msconfig under advanced and put a checkmark next to Disable scandisk after bad shutdown.

    Thank you :)

Have been shaky knees and shaky bladder LOL when it comes to fiddling with programming - I'll give it a shot or two, if all else fails, I'll be back with bigger problems :)

I have had the same trouble with scandisc starting up everytime even on a clean shutdown or restart,,,try going to your start menu/accessories/system tools/scandisc and check the thorough scan box, this will do a surface scan of your hard drive, it seem to do the trick for me, good luck

The scandisc on boot is a line in the msdos.sys file on the root drive.
This file is read only so you will need to change it's properties to edit it. The autoscan parameter should be changed from 1 to 0.
There are also a number of "tweak" apps that you can use to do this.
    regards
