Re formatting, and or re partitioning, or ???

O/S 98SE . I have a situation where, when I try to format c:, it starts out 1% then comes up insufficient memory. I have tried different switches /s/u/, and others with no luck.. I try to run scandisk, but there is no yellow line to gauge it. I can start the computer, and the hard drive will boot up into the c drive. The desktop will show up, then go to a window explorer and show all the C: directory. I can call up my programs and play them, but there is a problem in the startup menu of windows. I have tried to re- install windows. When it starts checking the HDD, disk error on the c; drive shows up. D:\ is ok. We show files ok in C drive, but the bootups are fouled up. I tried to use partition magic, but the download won't let me try it out unless i pay for it first. They say I have to make a DOS disk. Trying to find a copy somewhere..
I gave this computer to someone and they did a diagnostic from Norton, but It may have conflicted with the programs in the computer. If I can re format c, or re-install 98SE, I could fix it but can't figure out how? Also, any other disk recovery programs I should try.
Anyone with some ideas, PLEASE!!! I'm all ears.

    Thanks

Try formatting or even fdisk from a Win98 startup floppy. (At the A:\> Prompt). You can make one from a working Win98 machine. HTH. ;)

I already tried that and was unsuccessful. Set it up without CDRom and adjusted the CMOS section to boot floppy 1st.

    We welcome any other suggestions
