How to uninstall Norton AV 2003 safely

Hello,

I am not a new user but I've read that it is difficult to uninstall NAV 2003 without leaving a mess behind. Therefore, I need a step-by-step method of uninstalling Norton AV 2003 (all of it) from WinXP Pro. Could someone point me in the right direction please? I'm not afraid to dink with the registry if I know what I'm doing. The only Norton programs I have installed is NAV 2003 and LiveUpdate.

I'd just run the uninstall with it and then get symclean.exe from the Symantec site and run it. Should have it pretty well gone by then.

But just in case I missed something, I'll push this up to the applications section for a wider audience.

 

Uninstalling Norton

Buzzard, read down through This thread about uninstalling Norton/Symantec stuff from your computer. Pay particular attention to the post's by mflynn about cleaning out the registry and the file system. Worked for me.

Newt and JohnB, thanks for your help. I followed the recommended directions (mflynn, etc) and got NAV2003 uninstalled except for the Symantec Startup entries that are still listed in msconfig Startup. How do I get rid of those? Search cannot find anything else relating to Symantec or Norton in the registry. According to the "location" information in the Startup list, these entries are located in the registy under software\Microsoft\Current Version\Run but when I look in HKLM or the Users keys I don't see them. How do eliminate them from the msconfig Startup list? I must be missing something. Thanks again, Buzz

 

You need some 3rd party software like Startup Cop to remove these entries from msconfig/startup. As long as they are unchecked it will do no harm to leave them there.

 

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Look in the right pane and right click on the entry you want to get rid of and select delete.

If they aren't there, just reboot and they should disappear from your msconfig window.

Bill, I thought those items in the Startup window would disappear upon rebooting too but they didn't even though I cannot find them in the registry. Nothing happens when I right click on them either. Startup Cop doesn't see them either but they are there so I'm not going to worry about them. Maybe they'll disappear after I have rebooted numerous times because they do not exist anywhere in the registry. WinXP just doesn't want to cooperate with me. Thanks, Buzz
