To that I have to laugh.

Who reads the books ? I don't. I guess I just apply a little common sense arrived at from experience in making mistakes.

    Agreed.

This is a good point at which to quit.

I checked out the VCOM link- I didn't know ONE product could do all that! I use a half a dozen diff programs for regular maint. and that sure looks to be a convenient alternative. Does it really do all it claims, and well? Abraxas, I respect your opinion, and would appreciate your comments, good and bad. (BTW, are you a Santana fan?)

BillyBob, Reboot, and Mr Mark, you have given me a lot to consider and your thoughts have led to some interesting reading and research. I suspect you are all correct to some extent! Thank you for taking the time to teach me from your experiences, and for presenting the different schools of thought so eloquently.

    Cheers from Ohio

Believe me you DO NOT want my comments on ME. XP is even better than that.

I took a quick look at the VCOM site.

There is one part of the Suite that I do use and like very much. That is PowerDesk. I have used it for years. It also worked very well in XP. That is one thing that does have Windows counterpart ( Explorer ) beat by a mile and a half. Maybe even 2 miles.

    BillyBob --
    There's one I don't see the point in---Powerdesk!
It does nothing that I can see that Explorer doesn't do better, so even though I bought it, I removed it after finding Agent Ransack for searches.

It just seemed to duplicate what Explorer did already :) .

OK. You ask I will try to answer with why I think PD is far better.

If you open Explorer can you see two drives without opening and resizing two Explorer Windows ? If you can you have discovered something that I have not.

With PD it is Yes. And makes Draging-N-Dropping a breeze.

When you do open Explorer are all drives shown across the top ? I have never been able to do that with Explorer.

    With PD it is yes.

Will Windows Explorer handle .ZIP files ? Illiminating the need for WinZip. I do not think so.

    With PD it is yes.

As to " Find " For that I click start and select find. I do very little of that myself.

Explorer always opens to the same default set folder. And to change it is a PAIN in the butt.

PD opens where you left it last. If you want it to open in Root folder of the C: drive just select on same before closing. If you want it to open in the C:\Windows folder do the same.

PD is very similar to the old Xtree Gold ( I believe that was the name ) and also very similiar to the old PC Shell. ( if any one remembers that )

As I mention before, if you have made Windows Explorer do any of thses items you have found things that I have not. Or maybe I even Did not look for due to the fact of using PD for YEARS. I had it way back in the days of Win95.

Or even two folder on the same drive ?

Again with PD it is Yes.

With PD you have three choices

    Single pane
    Dual Pane Vertical
    Dual pane Horizontal

To the best of my knowledge this items are not available with Explorer.

Well, I see your point, but I just don't find it that difficult to open 2 explorers side by side, or what I do even more often is explorer on one side (with the drives listed down the left column, but I chnged that myself so they'd show) and an explorer instance with no folder pane on the right (My Computer).

With FileTargets added to my context menu, it is very rare that I need to use 2 panes--the target allows me to send a file wherever I want.

Not sure what you mean about zips---when I click on a zip in the left pane, the contents show in the right pane and I can move files into and out of it without unzipping. I have never used WinZip. No added software is needed for zip files in ME or XP---they are "compressed folders ".

The opening where it left off sounds like it could be handy sometimes.

But, to each his own, of course. It probably depends which one you get used to first that makes it seem the easiest.

I will do nothing less than agree with that straight forward and honest reply.

    they are "compressed folders ".

Yep. Just another one of MS fancy names for .ZIP files. Same thing.

    hey johanna

i've always maintained that it's very much a two-way street and that while some may be eloquent in their teaching, others are equally gracious in how they receive knowledge.

and darned if it isn't the gracious ones who glean the most from others!

    :)
