I'm running Win XP home W/ SP1 my automatic updater is set to notify me of available updates & ask me what to do (this is for downloading & installing). For the last 2 weeks I've been getting the same 2 updates shown as available:

    Security update, Feburary 13, 2002 (MSXML 2.6)
    Security update, Feburary 13, 2002 (MSXML 3.0)

Why do these two updates keep showing up? I've downloaded & installed them 3 times in the last 2 weeks.

    Any Ideas?

I've got a new Toshiba laptop with XP home that is doing the same thing. I just realized it today and looked here to find your post. I have Windows update set the same way you do. I can't find anything at Technet. I run Norton Internet Security and there isn't anything on their website either. I think I've been letting it install with Norton running, so I disabled it before this last update installed. I guess I'll find out tomorrow if that had any effect.

I've got Norton 2002 Antivirus not Internet Security but I've been installing the updates with Norton enabled I'll try it with Norton disabled this time also. Post back and let me know if yours worked or not and I'll try mine.

No change, after installing the updates with Norton disabled I got the same two updates again today.
I went to the Windows update site and submitted a tech support inquiry.
I'll post again what I hear from them.

Mine hasn't poped back up yet but normally it would come back after 2 days or so, guess I'll wait and see.

Maybe you'll get a response from Windows tech support it's just getting annoying

you shouldn't have to disable Norton to let M$ run an update, and you shouldn't ever disable it unless your modem is OFF, especially if you are on a broadband connection. Personally, I wouldn't let M$ update ANYTHING unless I authorized it, and I don't fix what ain't broke. I keep auto-update OFF and Norton ON.

Microsoft referred me back to Toshiba. Since this is an OEM installation they (Toshiba) should support it. I will call Toshiba tomorrow but I’m sure they’re not going to know anything because this is a Microsoft issue.
I changed my automatic update settings from "download updates automatically and notify me when they are ready to be installed" to "notify me before downloading any updates and notify me again before installing them on my computerâ€. Today I did not get notification to install those same two updates. From now on I should get notification that updates are available and be able to choose from a list what I download and install.

I called Toshiba and of course they can't tell me anything. I didn't expect them to.
Today Automatic Update notified me that updates were available to download and it was the same 2 updates.
So, I am just going to keep set to notify me when updates are available and skip over those 2 security updates.
If I find out anything I will post it.

Rename the folder C:\Windows\System32\Catroot2 to Old_Cat before trying again.

I've had great luck using a program called BigFix to control my updates. Also turned off any M$ update notifications.

    - BigFix often finds M$ updates before M$ would have let you know they were available.

    - You get a notification with link and some information (including if a reboot will be required or not) and then choose to install it now, install it later, or never hear about it again.

I use BigFix also. Really is good stuff. It even gave me a screen that said AVG antivirus program and BigFix have a conflict and asked if I wanted to fix it. I said yes and it did.;)

    hey newt & bill

does BigFix just advise about mistersoftee updates, or is it some kind of master updater notifier that i can configure to tell me when Spybot and Ad-aware and TrojanHunter and NAV and ZA and all the rest have issued updates?

and if BigFix ain't that animal, wouldn't it be excellent to have a utility like that?

right now i rely on a variety of newsgroups and forums and in one case (thank you Patrick Kolla), email notifications.

thought i'd ask you guys since you both use it....

    regards

    :)

If you have a "My Computer" icon on the desktop right click on it, then go to properties and a system properties box will pop up click on the tab for automatic updates, then uncheck the box to turn it off. Now if you don't have a "My Computer" icon "then go into the control panel, then performance& maintence, then click system, the system properties box should popup. Or go into my computer and click on veiw system information on the lefthand side (if you are using the XP veiw not the classic view)

    Hey Mark

Yes, MS only. You can pick which OS from 95 up. Also BigFix has a conflict with AVG antivirus but it fixes itself.

At one time, back when I had Win95, I had a program that went out and rounded up updates for everything I had installed on my computer. I can't remember what it was. This might be a good thread for General Discussions. Some one might remember or even have it running.

    Hi Guys

I think that started with Norton.. gained alot of momentum during the 2k doomsday mentality.... BUT I think they handed it off to Cnet. It required a small resident file which would review your installed software/hardware and provide a list of possible updates. It did NOT run in background, required to link into site and begin the process... ring any bells?

    UPDATE11:019___________________________

Check this page. Seems to imply the above approach... from McAfee.. subscription based. Does not support Windows NT 4 or XP.

ding dong! yes indeed. in fact i used to run that program, then grew impatient or bored with it, i forget which. <g>

i would love to see a program that provides email notifications for all updates and upgrades for all programs i use.

i would probably pay for that.

    :)

Yeah Dennis, that's it. I stopped using it when they handed it off to Cnet. I think they started charging for the service and then stopped it altogether due to lack of interest.

I do remember that the program found so many updates for MS Office, I had to hide them because they included every program or add on that every Joe Blow on the planet came up with.;)

    hi bill
    you're right, it would be.

don't you agree that it would be cool to have one program that went out and crawled the web specifically for program updates and upgrades, and then emailed you promptly when one was found?

    :)
