How hot should a athalon xp 2000+ (1.6ghz) run. I dont really do that much on it. When i first got it it would hover around 130...now its up to 140. I was told 150 is cooking.....Have the amd fan and heatsink on it...neither are dirty...was up? thanks for any help.

    ehauff,

I have never found the stock heatsinks or wax thermal compound they have pre-applied to be sufficient for my cooling needs.

I dumped the stock heatsink on my Athlon XP 1800 in favor of a Thermaltake Volcano 7 and Arctic Silver thermal compound.

The 140 (Fahreinheit I assume) you list translates to about 60 Celsuis. Depending on what die you have this can be close to or well below the maximum die temp.

The link below lists the various maximum die temps for the different models of the Athlon XP and MP.

    AMD Athlon Specs

That said, I'm sure you'll get a lot of feedback from the BBS members on the different types of cooling soltuions you have available.

If it turns out that your current temp is well below the maximum and you don't feel that what you do on your computer warrants an extra investment then it really becomes a matter of personal choice.

I always choose a 3rd party cooling solution as heat is your processor's enemy. The cooler I can make it run initally, the more room it gives me to experiment. :D

    Cheers,

    ICE

Well put Ice. I'd also look at what is setup for case fans and just how air is being moved through it. Your 2000+ should be running not much higher than 104 - 116 under light load and 122 - 130 under stress.

    ;)

Go with the ThermalTake Volcano 7+. I bought mine from http://www.1coolpc.com/ and it works great. It has 3 speed settings so you can crank it up when playing games, but keep it on low if you are just using Word or Excel-its pretty loud.

FYI: My computer runs 118-120 F on the lowest setting. When I play games I turn it to the middle setting and the temp remains the same.

Hex - not trying to turn this into a "heated point-counter point discussion ", but I'd say you are running rather warm for an 1800+. I'm running about 104-106F with a Coolermaster HSC V62 on a 2400+, in fact two machines like this. Very quiet and automatic variable speed fans with temp sensors. Had a couple of Volcano 9's with slightly higher temps on these machines but they sounded like jet engines.

    Quick look at TCWO:

Rockster2U: I've always seemed to lag a bit behind where I should cooling my AMD chips. It always seems I'm 3-5 C higher than everyone else reports. But I'm always open to new ideas. I will keep the Coolermaster in mind when I build my next machine.

If you turn this Volcano on high it sounds like a jet engine, but when I have Counter-Strike or Urban Terror cranked up its not too annoying

What do you use to moniter your temp? Im using fuzzy logic 4....cause it came with my board(msi kt4v). I installed a fan in the side so it blows right at the volcano 9 i installed on the cpu. Seems to help...runs steady 54 celsius. Still seems hot but iguess ill get used to it till i can afford a water cooler. Thanks

Look at your mother board temp also. This is a good indicator of your internal case tempeture. It is very inportant to get the heat out of the case. Several pulling fans are needed. Pushing fans do almost nothing. Most new cases have a minimum of (3) 80mm
fans pulling air out of the case.

The new Thermaltake cases have 6 chassis fans not including the power supply and CPU fans.

Hehehe - now the fun begins. What I have found is that more doesn't always equate to less or, said differently, more fans don't always result in lower temperatures - the key here is achieving the best air flow for your specific setup. This will probably require some experimenting to optimize your system.

At one point I was running 6 fans on one system, not counting CPU, chipset, video card or power supply (dual fans). I was able to achieve lower temps in that system with just 3 of the six because air was circulated better.

On two of my boxes, am now running (different systems & setup) one 80mm front intake, one 80mm side intake, one 80mm hard drive cage & front intake, one 80mm rear exaust and a dual 80mm fans on aluminum power supplies - all aluminum cases with round cables and three harddrives each. XP2400+'s running at 104-106 which will go as high as 118-123 under extreme load.

My best advice - Don't be afraid to try a few different combinations - and enjoy! Hehehe...... we're all kids at heart!

    ;)

I have an Athlon 2200+ and my cpu temp is 112f and my board temp is 94f.

I have two fans pulling out on the rear and one pulling in at the lower front.

My MB is Soyo which also supplied the hardware monitor that I use.

Stock CPU fan that came with it, the other three are just 80mm ball bearing fans that I picked up off the shelf.

Here is my experience concerning CPU (Athlons) temperatures.
I was suffering from excessive heat (65 - 69 degrees Celcius), and tried many of the suppossedly best coolers and even considered watercooling all to no avail.
To make a very long story short, THE thing that really made a difference was to change the cabinet, I now run a quicker processor (2200+ compared to 1333 and 1800+) at 35 - 39 degrees.
The old box had the PSU directly above the CPU, so the bigger the cooler the more "PSU-air" was sent to the processor.
The boxes You get these days are better designed coolingwise, but they still differ a lot, I would choose one with a lot of free space around the CPU, and the PSU far away.
I got an Antac cabinet, which I think is a clone of thermaltake.
Is this posting too long? - Never tried posting here before.
